Women's Fencing Upsets NYU

Chestnut Hill, MA - The Boston College Fencing team hosted New York University at the William J. Flynn Recreational Complex on Saturday, February 3, 2001. The men's team fell to NYU 18-9, while the women's team was victorious by a tally of 15-12. The men's sabre team went 5-4 in the defeat at the hands of NYU while the women's team, in their surprise upset, was led by an epee squad that won seven of their nine bouts.
Both teams traveled to compete at MIT on Sunday, February 4, 2001. The day was highlighted by strong individual performances for the Eagles, although the men's sabre squad dropped four out of five and the women lost all five of their matches. Freshman foilist Paul Taylor was 10 and 2 on Sunday, his only losses coming against top ranked UPenn. Senior epeeist Regina Lennox went 12-3. Final scores for the men's team were as follows: Duke 17 - BC 10, UNC 18 - BC 9, BC 22 - Yeshiva 5, UPenn 19 - BC 8. Final scores for the women's team were as follows: Duke 16 - BC 11, UNC 15 - BC 12, Cornell 17 - BC 10, UPenn 19 - BC 8.
Following this weekend's events, the men's team's cumulative record stands at 10-8. The women's record stands at 9-11. Boston College fencing will travel next to the University of New Hampshire on Saturday, February 10, 2001, to compete in a Northeast Fencing Conference Meet. Present at the event will be the University of New Hampshire, UMass- Amherst, Tufts University, Boston University, Sacred Heart University, Wellesley College, and Smith College.
