The Game: Boston College enters Wednesday's game after losing its conference game against third-ranked Connecticut, 78-53, at home on Sunday. Currently the Eagles are 8-14 overall and 2-9 in BIG EAST play. The team is currently in the midst of a five-game losing streak, its longest of the season.
The Eagles opened the season with two wins in the Chevrolet Classic before dropping a game to No. 3 Duke at home. BC improved to 3-1 with a road win over Holy Cross, but dropped its next two to No. 5 Purdue and No. 2 Tennessee. The Eagles earned two wins over La Salle and Dartmouth. BC lost to Kent State on the road, before defeating Buffalo at home. BC fell to Fairfield in overtime at home to end the millenium, but then opened the BIG EAST season with a win over St. John's on Jan. 2. The team dropped four in a row to Georgetown, Miami, Rutgers and Virginia Tech but snapped the streak with a win over Providence. Its last games were losses to Syracuse, Villanova, Seton Hall, Notre Dame and Connecticut.
Two Eagles are scoring in double-figures, led by Becky Gottstein's 15.5 points per game average. Freshman Amber Jacobs is second with an 11.8 average. Gottstein is also the team's leading rebounder with a 8.5 boards per game average. Senior Nicole Conway follows, averaging 6.6 rebounds per game.
Seton Hall enters the rematch with a 16-6 overall record and a 9-2 mark in BIG EAST games. The Pirates are in the middle of a four-game winning streak.
Seton Hall opened the season with a 2-2 mark in November with wins over Long Island and Monmouth, while dropping contests at Virginia Commonwealth and Ohio State. The Pirates went 6-2 in December, dropping its first of the month to Loyola College before wheeling off a six-game winning streak against Quinnipiac, Providence, George Washington, Towson, Buffalo and Mount St. Mary's. The Pirates then dropped a game in the finals of the Hawk Classic to St. Joseph's. SHU went 6-2 in January with wins over Syracuse, Pittsburgh, Georgetown, Villanova, West Virginia and BC. Its two losses were to Villanova and Notre Dame. In February, the Pirates have defeated St. John's and Miami.
Arminda Moreno is the Pirates' leading scorer, averaging 16.8 points per game. Leslie Ardon is second with a 9.4 points per game mark. Charlene Thomas leads the team in rebounding with a 5.8 per game average. Ardon is second with a 5.5 rebounds per game mark.
Against Seton Hall: Boston College holds a 21-12 advantage in the all-time series with Seton Hall. The Eagles have also won the last five meetings in the series dating back to Feb. 11, 1998. The BC seniors have never lost to the Pirates and are 5-0 over their careers. In those games, BC has averaged 67.4 points per game, while the Pirates have recorded 53.4 points per game. BC has outscored Seton Hall 337-267 in the last five games. The series started in 1983 and BC won 11 of the first 13 match-ups.
Last Time Out: The Eagles hosted third-ranked Connecticut, falling 78-53, in front of the first sellout crowd this season of 8,606 fans. UConn opened a 13-6 lead, but the Eagles stormed back to tie the game at 17 each. But UConn went on a run that game the team a 10-point lead at the half. UConn continued to roll in the second half and extended the lead to as many as 28 before settling on the 25-point win.
The Last Game Against Seton Hall - January 31, 2001: The women's basketball team dropped its third-straight game, 59-56, at Seton Hall. Three Eagles scored in double figures but the team could not stop a strong Pirate rally late in the game.
Seton Hall took a four point lead early in the game. The Eagle defense limited the Pirates to only 29.6 percent shooting in the first half and the offense responded with a five-point spurt to close the first half. Becky Gottstein netted her eighth-consecutive point and then Janelle MaManus hit a three-pointer to lead the Eagles to a 26-21 halftime lead.
BC opened the second half with a 7-2 run that gave it a 10-point lead with 15:05 left to play. Jamie Cournoyer paced the run with five of her 11 second-half points. The Pirates came back and played strong defense and with 6:32 left to play, tied the game on two Charlene Thomas free throws. BC took a four-point lead on McManus' second trey in two trips down court. Starr Fuller made a jumper and then converted one of two free throws. Seton Hall then tied the game on an Arminda Moreno three pointer, but Gottstein gave BC a two-point advantage with a jumper coming out of a timeout. Fuller added two more free throws and Moreno scored on a driving layup to give Seton Hall its first lead since the first half with 2:58 to play.
The two teams traded layups and BC managed a one-point lead on a Gottstein free throw, but Seton Hall scored two baskets in the closing seconds to win the game.
Gottstein led the Eagles with 17 points, while Cournoyer had a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. McManus added 11 points off the bench.
Moreno led all scorers with 20 points, while Thomas added 18 for Seton Hall. Fuller chipped in 11.
