DURHAM, N.H. - Boston College scored three times in the third period to overcome a 4-1 deficit and tie the game at 4-4 at the end of regulation, but New Hampshire's Darren Haydar scored his third goal of the night 2:26 into overtime to lead the Wildcats to a 5-4 victory before 6,501 at the Whittemore Center on Friday.
Boston College (7-5-1, 3-3-0 HEA) jumped on the board first when Ryan Murphy opened the scoring, taking a Ned Havern pass off the left boards and sneaking a shot past UNH goaltender Michael Ayers at 10:27 of the first period. Bill Cass also was credited with an assist. The Wildcats evened the score at 12:14 of the first when Colin Hemingway tallied a goal.
New Hampshire (8-2-2, 5-1-2 HEA) scored three goals just 3:27 apart in the second period to open it's 4-1 lead before the Eagles mounted their comeback. Haydar netted back-to-back goals at 9:12 and 10:36 - on the power-play - before Garrett Stafford scored at 12:39 for the three-goal advantage.
Ben Eaves began the Eagles' comeback at 3:54 of the third period. Jeff Giuliano broke up a clearing attempt in front of the net and sent Eaves in alone on Ayers for the score. Brett Peterson netted his first goal of the season and brought BC within one goal, 4-3, at 7:28 in the third when he one-timed a Havern rebound in for a goal. Ales Dolinar also received an assist on the goal.
Tony Voce brought BC back all the way at 14:08 in a goal similar to Eaves'. A.J. Walker broke up a clearing attempt from the slot and fed a charging Voce for the goal. Eaves also assisted on the score.
Haydar's goal in overtime was his third of the evening and fourth point of the game. Boston College outshot New Hampshire 15-5 in the third period, and 2-1 in overtime. Haydar's break-away score marked the first time the puck went into the BC zone in the extra session.
Ayers made 29 saves, while Matti Kaltiainen made 27 saves for the Eagles.
The Eagles will host Massachusetts on Saturday, December 1 at 7 p.m. at Kelley Rink.
