NEEDHAM, MA - Syracuse junior Kristin Aronowicz was named the BIG EAST Field Hockey Offensive Player of the Year, while her coach, Kathleen Parker, was named Coach of the Year by the league's coaches. Other award winners include Defensive Player of the Year Amelie Wulff of Boston College and Goalkeeper of the Year Meghan Helwig from Villanova. The awards were presented at the annual pre-championship banquet. The BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship is set for Nov. 3 and 4 at Boston College's Alumni Stadium in Chestnut Hill, Mass.
Wulff lived up to preseason expectations by becoming the fourth consecutive Preseason Defensive Player of the Year to win the regular season honor as well. The senior led a BC defense that posted three shutouts for the year and allowed only five goals in conference play. The native of Dusseldorf, Germany, was also the Eagles' second-leading scorer with 17 points (7g, 3a).
In addition, Boston College was well represented on the All-BIG EAST first and second teams. In addition to Wulff, junior Kim French was a first team selection. Senior Gina Dinan, freshman Kerri Doherty, and sophomore Lauren Hill were all second team selections. Boston College and Villanova led the All-BIG EAST first and second teams, each with five selections. Seven members of the first team also received all-conference honors last year.
Aronowicz, a native of Exton, Pa., claimed the offensive award by leading the Orangewomen in points with 32. She scored 15 goals this season, which ties her for first in the league. Aronowicz was also the 1999 BIG EAST Rookie of the Year.
Goalkeeper of the Year Helwig helped lead Villanova to its best BIG EAST record in history (3-2). The junior from Basking Ridge, N.J. recorded five shutouts and has been ranked nationally in saves in all but one week of the 2001 campaign. Through the end of the regular season, Helwig has recorded 126 saves for a save percentage of 0.824 and a goals against average of 1.42. She is the first Villanova player to win a regular season award.
Parker was the unanimous choice for coach of the year after guiding Syracuse to a 13-3 record this season. Under her tutelage, the Orangewomen went undefeated in BIG EAST play and their 5-0 record was SU's best since round robin play began in 1993. This is Parker's fourth coach of the year award, the last of which came in 1995.
