CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - For Boston College's women's soccer team, the second part of its 2001 schedule kicks off at 12:00 p.m. Sunday, November 4, when it takes on Rutgers University in the quarterfinals of the BIG EAST tournament at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
With the Eagles holding on to hopes of making the NCAA tournament, Sunday's contest with the Scarlet Knights is a win the Eagles must have. Besides trying to move on in the BIG EAST tournament, Boston College looks to avenge an regular-season 2-0 loss to Rutgers, which was also at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
In the teams first meeting back on October 21, Rutgers (12-6-1) got on the board in the 33rd minute when forward Keri Lages pounded home rebound inside the Boston College goalie box. The goal was made possible off an initial corner kick. The Eagles had a couple of opportunities to clear the ball but were not able to. Finally, Lages gathered the ball and drove it by Boston College goalkeeper Elyse Meredith.
Lages will be one of the players Boston College has to look out for. She finished the regular season with 12 goals and five assists, for a total of 29 points. Another player the Eagles have to keep an eye on his BIG EAST Rookie of the Year candidate Carli Lloyd. Lloyd, who scored the Scarlet Knights second goal of the game back on October 21, has tallied up 31 points on the season, which has come off of 13 goals and five assists.
In the teams first meeting, Boston College edged out Rutgers in the shot department (16-15), but was not able to get the ball past Scarlet Knights goalkeeper Christine Caldwell, who finished with six saves. Caldwell has recorded a BIG EAST high seven shutouts.
Boston College (10-8-1) heads into Sunday's game with a three-game winning streak, which includes a 2-1 win over Brown University back on Wednesday. Forward Meghan Moore and midfielder Sarah Rahko have been the offensive leaders this year for head coach Alison Foley's squad. Moore and Rahko are tied for the team lead in goals (8) and have combined to dish out 12 assists.
The winner of Sunday's contest will take on the winner of the Notre Dame-St. John's game at Yurcak Field in Piscataway, N.J., which is the home field of the Rutgers University men's and women's soccer teams, at 5 p.m. Friday, November 9.
