This past weekend our team traveled all over the state of New York. Friday night we went to Queens to play St. John's. This weekend was supposed to be our turn around weekend. The outcome wasn't as we had planned or hoped for.
The St. John's game was unfortunate. We had 14 shots to their five and about seven corner kicks to their zero. We worked hard to create opportunities to score, we just couldn't finish. After they scored a goal, they packed in their defense and played low pressure against us. We weren't able to score, so the game ended up as a 1-0 loss.
Saturday was used as a day of travel and preparation for Syracuse. Coach went over things that we needed to change from the St. John's game. Collectively, our team had a great practice on Saturday and was prepared for a win on Sunday.
The team came into the Syracuse game more fired up than we have been all season. We were determined to do whatever it took for a win. Sarah Rahko put away our first in goal in the first three minutes. Our mental attitude was superb. Every single person on and off the field was filled with intensity and determination. For the first time all season, we were winning most of the 50/50 balls and slide tackling all over the field. Unfortunately, we let them score with 40 seconds left in the first half. We didn't let this get us down.
The team came right back out in the second half and gave everything we had in us. With eight minutes left in the game, Kristen Goddard scored to put us on top. In the 86th minute, Syracuse got a free kick in our box off of a bad call. They capitalized on the opportunity to put us into overtime. Syracuse scored off a corner kick to take the victory.
Even though we walked away from this weekend with two losses, I feel that the team came together and worked harder than we have all season. The Syracuse game was the best overall team effort so far this season and we showed the ability to take things from practice and translate those skills and tactics into a game.
After this weekend's experiences, the team came together and decided that we were going to absolutely pummel any team that dared to step on the same field as us. The first team on our list to beat just so happened to be in-town rivals Boston University, who we beat 3-1, on Tuesday.
