NEWTON, Mass. - It might have taken 12 seasons and 13 meetings, but the Boston College women's soccer team finally ended its drought against the University of Connecticut. On Sunday, the Eagles scored their biggest win of the season as they defeated the No. 9 ranked Huskies 2-0 at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
With the win, Boston College (4-5-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) has now won three-straight games. The last time the Eagles defeated the Huskies was in 1990 when they won 1-0. Connecticut (8-4-0, 5-1-0 BIG EAST) now leads the all-time series 24-4-2. For UConn, it was the first time it had been defeated in a BIG EAST Conference regular-season game since October 26, 1997 when the Huskies lost to Notre Dame 1-0. The streak stretched over 35 contests.
The Eagles jumped out to an early lead when freshman midfielder Lindsey Fairweather headed the ball past UConn goalkeeper Erin Rice after BC senior forward Meghan Moore delivered a perfect cross at 2:22. Fairweather's goal was her third of the season, while Moore's assist was the second of the season for her.
Boston College's second goal of the game came in the second half when Moore blasted a shot from right outside the Connecticut box. The shot deflected off a UConn defender's back and ricochet into the net past Rice. Moore's goal in the 58th minute gives her five on the season, and with her assist earlier in the game she now has 12 total points.
One of the big stories of the game was the play of Eagle goalkeeper Elyse Meredith. Meredith, who making only her fifth start of the season, earned her first-career shutout as she finished the game with 10 saves.
For only the second time this season, Boston College was outshot by its opponent. UConn finished with 18 shots to Boston College's 11.
The Eagles are back in action at 3 p.m. Wednesday when they take on in-state rival Harvard University at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
