Hockey Opens Season With 5-1 Win Over Vermont

BURLINGTON, Vt. - Sophomore forward Tony Voce scored five points - three goals and two assists - to lead the seventh-ranked Boston College Eagles to a 5-1 victory over Vermont in the teams' 2001-02 season opener in men's hockey action. Sophomore Ben Eaves added one goal and three assists, while junior A.J. Walker scored one goal and two assists, in the victory before 4,035 at Gutterson Fieldhouse.
Eaves scored the game's first goal just 45 seconds into the game. Voce and Walker set up the power-play tally. Vermont's Brady Leisenring evened the score on a break-away later in the period at 10:27.
Voce scored his first goal of the game at 16:25 of the first period to give BC a 2-1 lead. Eaves and Walker set up his score. At 3:52 of the second period, Walker scored his first goal of the season, converting on a quick passing sequence from Voce and J.D. Forrest for the power-play score.
In the third period, again on the power play, Voce buried a pass from Eaves and freshman Ryan Shannon to give BC the 4-1 lead. At 16:50, Voce struck again to close out the scoring, netting another power-play goal from Eaves and goaltender Tim Kelleher.
Kelleher made 15 saves in the win for BC, while Vermont goaltender Shawn Conschafter made 25 saves in the loss.
BC was 4-for-6 on the power play, while killing off all four Vermont power plays.
Boston College will next face Denver in the first round of the Nye Frontier Classic, hosted by the University of Alaska-Anchorage, on Friday, Oct. 12 at 9 p.m. EDT. The Eagles will take on the host Seawolves on Saturday, Oct. 13 at 11 p.m. EDT.
