NEWTON, Mass. - In possibly the most explosive first half of the season for the Boston College women's soccer team, the Eagles tallied four goals en-route to a 4-2 victory over No. 24-ranked Miami on Friday at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
With the win, more importantly, Boston College (3-5-1, 1-2-1 BIG EAST) moves itself back in contention for one of the eight spots available for the BIG EAST Conference tournament.
Miami forward Laura West kicked off the scoring explosion at the 9:05 mark when she received a pass from midfielder Britney Butcher and knocked the ball in from around 10 yards out. With the goal, the conference's leading scorer tallied her eighth goal of the season.
The Eagles did not waste much in tying the score up, actually they wasted only 14 seconds following West's goal, as forward Carolyn Iacobelli scored following a mishap by a Hurricane defender. Once she got around the defender, she slid the ball past Miami goalkeeper Rachel Elsby.
Iacobelli was not done as she scored her second goal of the contest in the 18th minute off an assist from midfielder Sarah Rahko. Rahko delivered a perfect pass up the right side of the field and Iacobelli hammered the ball in the far corner.
The Hurricanes would not go away following the Eagles two-unanswered goals as forward Allison McWhinney pounded the ball in the back of the net from around 10 yards out off an assist from midfielder Anik Huffman to tie the game up.
The unfortunate thing for Miami was that following McWhinney's goal to tie the score at 2-2, Boston College struck back a mere 12 seconds later when Rahko blasted a shot past Elsby as a Miami defender applied pressure.
Rahko would end up being Miami's nightmare on Friday as she scored her second goal of the game with only 27 seconds left in the first half off an assist from midfielder Kristen Goddard. With her two goals and one assist, Rahko now has seven goals and two assists for a total of 16 points on the season.
Boston College goalkeeper Elyse Meredith was the story of the second half as she was able to withstand several attacks by the Hurricane offense. She finished the game with a career-high nine saves.
The Eagles outshot the Hurricanes 21-13 for the game, which was the seventh time this season they have outshot their opponent.
