Boston College To Host 2001 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship

Providence, R.I. - Boston College and Alumni Stadium will serve as host and site of the 2001 BIG EAST Field Hockey Championship during the weekend of November 3-4. The four-team field will feature regular season champion Syracuse (13-3/5-0), Boston College (11-7/4-1), Villanova (11-7/3-2), and Rutgers (4-12/1-4).
The 2001 championship match-ups will span two days and feature semifinal action at 11:00 am (#1 Syracuse vs. #4 Rutgers) and 1:00 pm (#2 Boston College vs. #3 Villanova) on Saturday as well as the BIG EAST Championship at 12 noon Sunday.
Syracuse, ranked No. 18 in the latest STX/NFHCA poll, went 5-0 in the league for the first time since round robin play began in 1993. The Orangewomen's previous best league record was 4-0-1 in 1993 and '94. Syracuse has won two BIG EAST Championships, the last coming in 1995.
Syracuse will face fourth-seeded Rutgers in the first semifinal. Rutgers, Providence and Connecticut finished league play in a three-way tie for fourth, all with 1-4 records. In accordance with BIG EAST tie-breaking procedures, Rutgers gained the advantage first in goal differential and then in its head-to-head match-up with Connecticut. The Scarlet Knights are making their third appearance in the conference tournament.
No. 2 Boston College will meet No. 3 Villanova in the second semifinal. Both teams are returning to the championship after a one-year hiatus. The Eagles earned a 4-1 league mark this year and won their last BIG EAST Championship in 1997. The Wildcats finished BIG EAST play with a 3-2 record, their best since round robin play began in 1993. BC defeated VU, 4-2, in regular season play.
The winner of the BIG EAST Championship receives the league's automatic bid to the NCAA Division I Field Hockey Championship. First and second round games will be held on the campuses of participating institutions. The national championship will be hosted by Kent State University in Kent, Ohio. The semifinals are scheduled for Friday, Nov. 16, with the national championship game on Sunday, Nov. 18.
