Eagles Picked Fourth In The BIG EAST

NEWARK, N.J. - The Boston College women's basketball team was selected fourth in the annual BIG EAST Coaches' Preseason Poll, released today. The Eagles received 125 votes.
In addition, BC forward Becky Gottstein was selected to the 2001-2002 Preseason All-BIG EAST First Team.
Last season, Boston College finished seventh in the BIG EAST with a 7-9 conference record.
Connecticut was selected to win the BIG EAST regular season title, according to the coaches', receiving 167 votes and 11 first-place votes. Notre Dame, the defending national champion, beat out Rutgers for second place with the teams receiving 157 and 143 votes respectively. They were followed by BC, Villanova, Virginia Tech, and Georgetown. The bottom half of the poll had Miami in ninth place followed by Seton Hall, Syracuse, and Providence. Pittsburgh, St. John's and West Virginia rounded out the rankings.
Gottstein was named to the 2001-2002 All-BIG EAST First Team. Joining Gottstein on the All-BIG EAST First Team was 2001-2002 Preseason Player of the Year selection Sue Bird and Swin Cash from Connecticut, Rebekkah Brunson from Georgetown, Trish Juhline from Villanova and Alicia Ratay from Notre Dame. Notre Dame's Jacqueline Batteast was tabbed preseason rookie of the year. Gottstein, a senior forward from Albany, N.Y., led the Eagles in scoring last season averaging 15.4 points per game, despite missing five games with a wrist injury.
