Women's Soccer Falls To Rutgers 2-0

NEWTON, Mass. - Prior to the Villanova contest on Friday, the Boston College women's soccer team had shutout it previous two opponents. Unfortunately for the Eagles, they have now been shutout in their last two games. The Eagles were held scoreless by Rutgers University on Sunday, as they fell 2-0 at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
Rutgers (11-5-1, 4-1-1 BIG EAST) got on the board first in the 33rd minute when forward Keri Lages pounded home a rebound inside the Boston College goalie box. The Scarlet Knights made the goal possible off an initial corner kick. The Eagles had a couple opportunities to clear the ball but were not able to. Finally, Lages gathered the ball and drove it by Boston College goalkeeper Elyse Meredith.
The Scarlet Knights went into halftime with a 1-0 lead. Following halftime, Boston College (7-8-1, 3-2-1) stepped up its level of play on the offensive end in the second half but was not able to get anything by Rutgers goalkeeper Christine Caldwell, who finished with six saves.
Rutgers put the game on ice in the 81st minute when midfielder Carli Lloyd one-touched the ball in the opposite corner of the net past a diving Meredith. The goal came off a perfect cross from defender Erica Schubert. Meredith finished the game with eight saves for Boston College, which gives her 76 saves on the season.
The women's soccer team is back in action at 2 p.m. Wednesday, October 24, when it takes on Holy Cross in Worcester, Mass. In last year's contest between these two teams, Boston College won 9-0.
