Field Hockey Tops Villanova, 4-2, In Conference Play

Villanova, PA -- The Boston College field hockey team claimed a spot in the 2001 BIG EAST Championships with a 4-2 victory over Villanova Saturday afternoon at Villanova Stadium. With the win, the Eagles improve to 8-7 overall and 3-1 in the BIG EAST. The Wildcats are 9-7 on the year and finished their BIG EAST season at 3-2. The 2001 BIG EAST Championships will be held in Alumni Stadium November 3-4.
Boston College scored the first two goals of the afternoon. Junior Kim French (Shrewsbury, MA) assisted on classmate Kim Desto's (Holden, MA) goal at the 20:50 mark to open the scoring. Nearly 13 minutes later, French scored a goal of her own and was assisted by junior Virgina Drozd (Richmond, VA).
Villanova cut the Eagles lead to 2-1 with 1:48 remaining in the first half and then evened the score at two at the 19:52 mark in the second half. Boston College wasted little time, quickly regaining the lead three minutes later on a goal by freshman Roni Morgan (St. Louis, MO). Morgan's second goal of the season proved to be the game-winner. Eagle freshman Kerri Kulesza (Spencer, MA) scored her first collegiate goal to give Boston College the final 4-2 advantage with 5:32 left to play.
BC goaltender Lauren Hill (Bethesda, MD) made 12 saves in goal, eight in the second half. She received some assistance protecting the Eagle goal from Drozd who was credited with a defensive save late in the second half.
The Eagles return to action Monday night with a non-conference match-up against Maine. Boston College's final three regular season games will be played at Alumni Stadium. After hosting the Black Bears, the team will host Holy Cross Wednesday and then BIG EAST foe Rutgers on Oct. 28.
