Eagles Look To Extend BIG EAST Win Streak
The Boston College women's soccer team (4-6-1, 2-2-1 BIG EAST) looks to stay on the right track as it enters an important weekend of BIG EAST action against Georgetown and Virginia Tech. This weekend's games will be the fifth and sixth of a seven-game homestand for the Eagles.
The Eagles enter Friday's contest with Georgetown having defeated No. 24 Miami and No. 9 Connecticut in there previous two BIG EAST games. The game against the Hoyas will start at 3 p.m. at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
Georgetown (6-4-1, 1-3-0) is coming off a 3-2 overtime victory over in-state rival American University on Wednesday, while Boston College ended a three-game winning streak, also against an in-state rival in Harvard University. The Eagles fell to the Crimson 1-0 on Wednesday when Harvard forward Caitlin Costello scored in the 29th minute off a header over the outstrethced arms of Boston College goalkeeper Elyse Meredith.
Boston College will wrap up the weekend when it takes on BIG EAST newcomer Virginia Tech at 12:00 p.m. Sunday. The women kick off a double-header on Sunday, which is followed by men's soccer action as West Virginia invades Newton Campus Soccer Field to take on the BC men's soccer team.
Virginia Tech (6-4-2, 0-4-0 BIG EAST) enters Friday's conference game with Providence looking for its first BIG EAST win, but at the same time looking to extend its three-game winning streak. In the Hokies last contest, they scored two goals in the final 15 minutes of the game to defeat in-state rival Radford University 2-1. BC's contest with Virginia Tech will be the first meeting between these two teams.
Scouting BC's Opponents
While most teams rely on offense to win games, but the Hoyas of Georgetown have gained success through excellent goaltending. Senior Shereena Chang, who sat out the contest against American, has only allowed 1.04 goal per game in her nine outings. She has given up only eight goals this year and has recorded one shutout.
On the offensive side, the Hoyas have been led by junior forward Karin Ostrander, who leads the team in total points with 10. She has tallied two goals, which is tied for third on the team, and dished out an amazing six assists. Sophomore forwards Jessie Beers-Altman and Jen Choiniere are tied for the team lead in goals with three.
Virginia Tech has also received outstanding goaltending this season. Sophomore Katie Hancock has started and played in all 12 games this season. She has recorded three shutout, while only relinquishing 1.19 goals per game.
Forwards Joy Nsubuga and Kim Wyckoff have been the offensive leaders this year. Nsubuga has recorded three goals and added two assists for a team leading total of eight points, while Wyckoff is tied with Nsubuga for the team lead in goals with three.
Last Time Out
Harvard forward Caitlin Costello's header over the outstretched arms of Boston College goalkeeper Elyse Meredith in the 29th minute of Wednesday's contest was all the No. 11 Crimson would need as they defeated the Eagles 1-0 at Newton Campus Soccer Field.
The loss ended Boston College's three-game winning streak and extended Harvard's regular season over the Eagles to 10. Harvard now leads the all-time series 18-6-3.
Harvard midfielder Caitlin Fisher delivered a perfect cross over the Eagle defense and Costello headed the ball in the net.
The very athletic Crimson team controlled play for the majority of the first half and did not let Boston College get in a rhythm. Harvard outshot Boston College 7-3 in the first half.
The Eagles came out in the second half with more fire and had several scoring opportunities, but was not able to get the ball by Crimson goalkeeper Cheryl Gunther who finished with five saves on the day. BC midfielder Sarah Rahko had the best opportunity when she took a rebound and tried to head the ball in the net, but the ball went directly Gunther.
Harvard finished the game with 17 shots compared to Boston College's nine. Forward Meghan Moore led the Eagles with three shots.
Eagles Lose MacDonald For Season
The women's team received bad new following Tuesday's 3-1 victory over Boston University. Junior defender Kate MacDonald with be out for the remainder of the 2001 season because of a torn anterior cruciate ligament, which occurred during the first half of the contest. MacDonald has started and played in all eight games this year for the Eagles.
Rhode Island Game Rescheduled
The Boston College and Rhode Island matchup, which was suppose to take place on September 25, has been rescheduled for 3 p.m. Tuesday, October 16, at Newton Campus Soccer Field. The game was postponed because of poor weather in Boston back on the 25th.
Head Coach Alison Foley
Boston College women's soccer coach Alison Foley is in her fifth season as the head coach of the Eagles. Under her direction, the Eagles have become one of the elite programs in the country as BC has posted a 56-33-10 mark under her tutelage.
In 2000, BC staged a 14-7 campaign and advanced to the semifinals of the BIG EAST tournament. Alumnus Sarah Powell earned All-America honors, as well as BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year accolades. Sarah Rahko was the league's Rookie of the Year and also garnered Northeast Regional All-American honors. The team's offense clicked at a high pace, scoring 54 goals, the most since Foley's arrival at the Heights.
Moore is Better: Forward Meghan Moore is off to a quick start this 2001 season. In nine games, she has recorded five goals and added two assist.
With her goal against Ohio State back on September 9, she earned her 20th goal of her career. She has also tallied 26 assists for a total of 70 points. Following her two goal and one assist weekend at the UConn/Diadora Classic, she was named to the All-Classic team.
In the Connecticut game on Sunday, Moore accounted for both Eagle goals. She recorded the assist on Fairweather's first-half goal
Eagle Players Honored By BIG EAST
Midfielder Sarah Rahko and goalkeeper Elyse Meredith were named BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week and Goalkeeper of the Week, respectively, after leading the Boston College women's soccer team to a perfect 3-0 week.
Rahko earned offensive player of the week honors after scoring three goals and dishing out two assists over the three-game span. She tallied one goal against Boston University, and was Miami's worse nightmare on Friday as she scored two goals and dished out two assists.
Rahko joins UConn forward Jessica Gjertsen as the only two conference players to earn offensive player of the week honors twice.
Meredith earned her first three collegiate wins last week, including her first shutout when BC defeated UConn 2-0. In the Eagles' three wins, she recorded 27 saves, including 10 against Connecticut. In BIG EAST Northeast Divisional games, Meredith is only giving up 1.48 goals per game.
