Boston College Takes 12th Place At The Millersville Open

MILLERSVILLE, Penn. - Boston College wrestling team placed 12th out of 21 teams at the Millersville University Open on Jan. 6, 2001 in Millersville, Penn. The Eagles collected 29.0 points.
Co-captain Steve Pregiato went 3-2 on the day in the 141 weight class, defeating Josh Kurjan (Western Maryland) 16-0 and Jim Hanning (University of Pittsburgh-Johnstown) before falling to Pat Diaz (James Madison) 6-5. In the consolation round, Pregiato won his match against Mark Mansueto (Maryland) 6-3 before ending his day with a 9-4 loss to Ben Witmer (Stevens Tech).
Dan Degan went 5-2 before placing fifth in the 174 bracket. Degan was victorious against Lance Kearns (forfeit) from Maryland, Bud Putnam from Millersville (19-11) before dropping 7-1 to Rutger's Justin Haskins. In the consolation round, Degan won against Binghampton's Jeff McAveney, 5-2, and fell to Duke's Frank Cornely in a 13-11 decision. In his final match, Degan beat John Burda, 1-2.
In the 182 weight bracket, Brad Shemlock finished 4-2 for the day, taking home a fifth place finish. Shemlock opened with a loss to Maryland's Jay Stork 8-3. Shemlock rallied back in the consolation round to take three wins against Chris Sample from Duke (8-3), Mike Mergott from Coast Guard (11-4) and Slippery Rock's John Opfar (8-4), before falling to James Madison's Dave Colabella. Shemlock defeated Matt Benton 6-2 to take fifth place.
Putting forth a strong effort for Boston College, Ricky Meritt was defeated twice in the in the 133 weight. Competing for the Eagles in the 149-weight bracket, Pete Tarricone went 1-2, while Mike Payack went 0-2 for the day. Also competing, Evan Williams fell twice in the 157 bracket.
Winning the open was Rutgers with 147.5 points.
Boston College wrestling has no team record as of yet. They will compete against Columbia and Bucknell in New York, N.Y., in a meet to begin at 10:00 a.m.
