ITHACA, N.Y. - The Cornell women's ice hockey team swept its season series with Boston College with a 5-3 win, behind inspired play from senior center Erica Olson (Minneapolis, Minn.) and sophomore winger Lindsay Murao (Richmond, B.C.) Jan. 27 at Lynah Rink. The Big Red had shutout BC 6-0 on Nov. 26 in Chestnut Hill.
The Red played catch-up the first two periods, falling behind 1-0 at 9:18 of the first when Gen Richardson shoved the puck past Cornell goaltender Sanya Sandahl (Superior, Wisc.). Cornell senior co-captain Patricia Kemp (Kanata, Ont.) tied the game on a power-play goal when she took a cross from junior Erinn Perushek (Maple Grove, Minn.) at 17:13.
BC went up 2-1 at 4:36 of the second on a goal by Kelly McManus. Murao answered with a goal of her own at 5:21 with assists going Olson and sophomore defenseman Brooke Bestwick. Cornell took its first lead at 11:01 when junior assistant captain Jenel Bode (Yorkton, Sask.) flipped the puck past Eagle goalie Amy Coletta. Junior Sarah Olivier (Gloucester, Ont.) and Murao assisted on the play.
Olson gave the Red a commanding 4-2 lead heading into the third period, tallying her first goal of the game with only 12 seconds on the clock, with Murao and Bestwick getting their second assists of the game each.
The Eagles hung tough in the third as sophomore defender Sarah Engwall wristed the puck between Sandahl's legs at 2:27, leaving the score at 4-3. Sandahl would redeem herself after she stopped a BC penalty shot with nine minutes remaining in the period. On the ensuing faceoff, Olson sifted through two Eagle defenders before scoring her second goal of the game, unassisted, to ensure victory.
Cornell (7-10-1, 5-9-1 ECAC) will play Dartmouth, which sits atop both the ECAC and national polls, on Sunday at 2 p.m. in Lynah Rink.
