Women's Basketball Falls To Hokies

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Virginia Tech used a 10-0 run midway through the second half to defeat Boston College, 64-52, in women's basketball action at Conte Forum tonight in front of 1,727 fans. Four players scored in double figures for the Hokies as they won their second league contest in their inaugural BIG EAST season.
Boston College opened the game with an 11-4 spurt as Nicole Conway had five points and Becky Gottstein added four. The Eagles continued to lead through the first half, but with 6:12 remaining, Virginia Tech mounted a 10-2 run that gave the team its first lead of the game, 27-25, with just over a minute left in the half. BC tied the score on two Gottstein free throws and Rachel Byars added another to take a slim 28-27 lead, but the Hokies' Christina Strother added a basket at the buzzer to retake the lead at the intermission, 29-28. At the half, Gottstein led all scorers with 14 points
Virginia Tech posted six quick points to open the second half and took a 35-28 lead, but then the two teams went back and forth trading steals. Boston College was the next to score as Amber Jacobs netted a jumper from Gottstein. As the Eagles got within five points on the bucket, the Hokies responded with a three pointer by Lisa Guareri to extend an eight-point lead. Coming out of a timeout, Janelle McManus netted a trey to scrape back within three after Gottstein had netted a hoop. Buckling down on defense, Virginia Tech responded with a 12-2 run that opened a 13-point advantage, 50-37, with 8:40 to play. Sarah Hicks netted six points during the span.
Gottstein was responsible for all 10 of the Eagles' points between the 13:31 and 5:36 marks as the Hokies held control of the game. McManus netted two late scores, but Virginia Tech converted on seven-of-10 free throws down the stretch to secure the win.
Gottstein led all scorers with 24 points, a season high, and also had a game-high seven rebounds. Hicks and Tere Williams each had 12 points, while Ieva Kublina and Chrystal Starling added 10.
With the loss, BC fell to 7-9 overall and suffered its fourth consecutive loss. It marked the first time since the 1995-96 season that the Eagles lost four in a row. They also fell to 1-4 in the BIG EAST. Virginia Tech moved to 11-5 overall and 2-3 in league play.
The Eagles will next travel to Providence on Saturday, Jan. 20, for a 2 p.m. contest.
