Chestnut Hill, Mass. - The Boston College women's soccer team opened its 2000 home schedule with a bang today, defeating Holy Cross 9-0 at the Boston College Soccer Fields in Newton, Mass. Junior Meghan Moore (Santa Barbara, Calif.) scored two goals and added three assists to lead the Eagles, who outshot the Crusaders by a margin of 35-4.
Sophomore Colleen Danaher (Rockford, Ill.) opened the scoring in the 27th minute of the first half, firing a blast from 16 yards off of fellow sophomore Katherine Halloran's (Hanover, Mass.) cross. Just over one minute later, Danaher scored again, this time putting home a Moore corner kick from three yards out. In the 42nd minute, freshman Lauren Vanni (Fairfax Station, Va.) scored the first of her two goals, drilling a shot off of a run from 10 yards out.
At the end of the first half BC was leading 3-0, but there was still 45 more minutes to play, and the Eagles (2-1-0 overall) were not about to stop shooting the ball. In one 12-minute span beginning with Moore's first goal in the 58th minute, the Eagles scored five goals against Tiffany DeCoff, the Crusaders' (0-2-0 overall) goalkeeper who finished with 14 saves.
Senior Katherine Murphy (South Windsor, Conn.) scored from 25 yards in the 62nd minute, followed by Moore's second goal one minute later. In the 64th minute, junior Morgan Page (Westerly, R.I.) beat DeCoff with a header from the doorstep. In the 69th minute Vanni tallied her second of the day, scoring from right in front of the goal off of junior Lindsey Marshall's (Greensboro, N.C.) corner kick. Senior Emily Feeney (North Kingstown, R.I.) added the ninth Eagles goal of the afternoon with 12 seconds left in the game.
Senior goalkeer Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y.) recorded three saves for her second shutout of the 2000 season, and 29th of her career. Schaeffer, the 2000 BIG EAST preseason goalkeeper of the year and this past week's BIG EAST goalkeeper of the week, now boasts an .860 career goals against average and a career record of 38-19-6.
The Eagles' next game will Friday, September 8, when they take on Boston University in the ECAC Tournament at Cape Cod Technical High School in Harwich, Mass. Game time is 3 p.m.
