Amelie Wulff netted the game-winning penalty stroke with 24:16 left to play as the Boston College field hockey team defeated the visiting Providence College Friars, 2-1, at Alumni Stadium in the team's opening game of BIG EAST play this season. Wulff scored the game's first goal off a penalty corner.
The Eagles controlled play throughout the game, allowing only a handful of Friar offensive rushes. Providence keeper Heather Tattersall kept the Friars in the game, making 13 saves, including seven in the first 20 minutes of play.
Wulff's first goal came off a corner as Morgan Brady pushed out to Jen Hall, who stopped for Wulff with 17:34 remaining in the first half. Minutes later, the Eagles missed another scoring chance as Tattersall came out of the cage to make a stop on Christy Zider's rush. The ball got away from Tattersall before she could clear it and Nichole Bukowski had an open net to shoot at, but a foul was called and the Friars took control of the ball. The Eagles held a 1-0 lead at the intermission.
In the second half, the Friar took advantage of a penalty corner called on a play outside the circle and netted the tying score. Breanne Wojnarowicz took a feed from Stefanie Suehnholz who stopped Julie Tanguay's push with 26:43 remaining in the game. However, the Eagles regained control of the game and made the penalty shot called against Tattersall stand up for the win.
Keeper Jill Dedman made two saves in the win for the Eagles. Tattersall stopped 13 shots in defeat.
Boston College now stands at 7-3 on the season and 1-0 in the BIG EAST. Providence fell to 2-9 overall and 0-2 in league play.
The Eagles will next face Syracuse in a BIG EAST contest on Sunday, Oct. 1, at 1 p.m. in Syracuse.
