Fifth-ranked Penn State used a goal in each half to defeat 14th-ranked Boston College, 2-0, at Alumni Stadium. Kiley Kulina's goal off a corner, from Traci Anselmo and Mandy Robinson, with 15:30 remaining in the first half was all the Nittany Lions needed to defeat the Eagles.
Penn State's second goal by Anselmo off another corner with 3:35 left to play added insurance, stifling the Eagles as they began to pick up the tempo and create offensive opportunities for themselves.
In the first half, with the Nittany Lions up 1-0, Gina Dinan fired a shot on the cage from the left sideline, beating Penn State goalkeeper Heidi Leuchte, but as time expired in the half, the shot hit the post before Nichole Bukowski could knock it home. In the second half, still trailing 1-0, the Jen Hall sent Christy Zider in down the left wing for a breakaway, but Leuchte came out past the circle and tipped the ball out of play.
Before posting their second goal, Penn State had a promising scoring chance when Kulina maneuvered through the midfield and past the Eagle defense, putting a shot on net while going to her right. Eagle keeper Jill Dedman made a diving save to preserve the then 1-0 score.
Leuchte made four saves in the win, while Dedman posted 12 saves in the loss.
Boston College, now 5-2 on the season, sees its next action when it travels to Parsons Field on Wednesday, Sept. 20, to face 10th-ranked Northeastern at 6:30 p.m. Penn State, also 5-2, will next face Iowa at home on Sept. 23 at noon.
