Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Two Boston College seniors have been honored with preseason player of the year honors, the BIG EAST conference announced on Monday, August 7.
Senior defender Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass.) was named BIG EAST preseason defensive player of the year and senior goalkeeper Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y.) was named 2000 BIG EAST preseaon goalkeeper of the year. Both players were also named to the 2000 preseason All-BIG EAST Team, as was Boston College junior Morgan Page (Westerly, RI).
Powell has started all but one of Boston College's 61 games in her three years in Chestnut Hill, tallying three goals and three assists. Last season, Powell was named honorable mention All-America by both College Buzz and College Soccer Online. College Buzz also selected her to the All-Northeast Region First Team, as did the National Soccer Coaches Association of America, while the New England Women's Intercollegiate Soccer Association named her to their all-New England first team. Soccer America voted Powell to their team of the week for the week of Sept. 14.
A 1999 all-BIG EAST first team member and 1998 second team member, Powell was named the conference's defensive player of the week three times for the weeks of Sept. 6, Oct. 4 and Nov. 1.
She will again anchor the defense this year as the Eagles attempt to make back-to-back NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time since 1984-85.
Schaeffer has also started all but one of the 61 games the Eagles have played in the past three seasons. With a spakling .887 GAA and 11.5 shutouts under her belt in 1999, she was named to College Buzz' all-Northest region second team and the NSCAA's all-Northeast region third team. She was named the BIG EAST's goalkeeper of the week three times, for the weeks of Oct. 4, Oct. 25 and Nov. 1. Schaeffer currently has a career GAA of .883 with 27.5 shutouts in her three seasons with the Eagles.
Page, a forward, was second on the Eagles in scoring in 1999, registering 13 goals and seven assists for 33 total points. In her two-year career at BC she has amassed 68 total points (29 goals and 10 assists) in only 43 games.
The 1999 Boston College women's soccer team finished the season with a 16-7-1 record, advancing to the third round of the NCAA tournament for the first time in school history.
The Eagles will open their season on the road at Hartford on Friday, August 25, and will make their first home appearance Sunday, September 3, against Holy Cross at 12 noon.
