Chestnut Hill, Mass. - Two Boston College seniors have been honored with BIG EAST player of the week honors for the week of August 28.
Senior defender Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass.) was named BIG EAST defensive player of the week and senior goalkeeper Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y.) was named BIG EAST goalkeeper of the week.
Over a two game span, Powell, the 2000 BIG EAST preseason defensive player of the year, anchored an Eagle defense that yielded only 15 shots. On Friday, Powell's defensive corps yielded only 10 shots to the No. 7 ranked team in the nation, the University of Hartford. Against Fairfield on Sunday, her defense allowed only five shots, while Powell herself scored the Eagles' game-winning first goal.
Schaeffer, the 2000 BIG EAST preseason goalkeeper of the year, made a total of five saves in the Eagles' first two games, shutting out Fairfield and starting the season with 1.00 goals against average.
The Eagles currently stand at 1-1-0 overall. Their next game, which will also be their home opener, is this Sunday, Sept. 3, at 12 noon.
