Annual Giving

The core of the William J. Flynn Fund is the annual giving program. Your annual investment helps fund scholarships, recruiting, facility upgrades and operating costs. Annual gifts can be made in one of two ways:

All annual gifts to Athletics are tax deductible to the extent of the law and Boston College's fiscal year runs from June 1 to May 31. Gifts to Boston College earmarked for athletics qualify donors for membership in the Boston College Giving Societies. The breakdown for the societies are as follows:

All donors to athletics are invited to the Flynn Fund Family Barbecue, which is held every August. In addition, donors at determined levels receive media guides, privileged parking for home football, hockey and basketball games, and priority tickets for special events. Endowments

Opportunities exist to establish a permanently named endowed fund that will benefit our student-athletes perpetually. An endowment is a donation, which is invested, and the interest generated from the principal is used to fund an athletic scholarship. Donors who provide a gift to fund an endowment have the opportunity to permanently link their name or a loved one's name to Boston College Athletics. We currently have more than 87 named endowed funds.

An endowed Athletic Program Fund, a minimum gift of $100,000 to establish, would provide flexibility to direct resources where they would have the most significant impact in any given year. Such a fund could provide resources for a broad range of ongoing needs including team travel, recruitment, program enhancement and equipment. This fund would help enable the Athletic Program's leadership to respond to challenges and opportunities as they change over time.

An endowed Athletic Scholarship Fund helps attract the finest student-athletes to Boston College and help ensure that the University continues to field highly competitive and successful teams into the future. Endowments can range from a $500,000 fully funded athletic scholarship, to a $400,000 fully funded tuition scholarship, to a $100,000 partially funded scholarship.

Either fund could be directed toward the overall Athletic Program or restricted to a specific program. An endowed fund for women's athletics, for example, would contribute to the University's efforts to enhance opportunities for female student-athletes.

An endowed gift can be paid over a period of years and will establish your commitment to Boston College Athletics in perpetuity. For information on establishing a named fund please contact Jim Paquette at (617) 552-0772.

Planned Giving

You can make a gift to the University using any one of the following gift arrangements, or you can combine them in creative ways to suit your unique circumstances. We invite you to consider the following options:

A Gift of Cash: Gifts of cash, paid outright or pledged over a period of years, provide immediate support for Boston College. Those who itemize their income tax returns are entitled to a charitable deduction of up to 50% of adjusted gross income, with a five-year carry-over period for the excess.

A Gift of Securities: Gifts of long-term, appreciated securities, provide the same benefits as cash for Boston College and offer you the additional benefit of paying no capital gains tax. Your contribution is based on the mean value of the stock when you transfer the stock to the University. You are entitled to a charitable contribution up to 30% of adjusted gross income (with a five-year carry-over) and you avoid the capital gain that would have applied had you sold the securities.

A Gift of Real Estate: Most real estate has appreciated faster than the rate of inflation and offers great potential as a gift planning opportunity for Boston College. We would be happy to explore the options and benefits with you of considering the gift of a home, vacation property, condominium, undeveloped land, or other real estate. Real estate contributed outright, in trust, or through a part gift/ part sale arrangement provides a way to avoid or substantially reduce capital gain tax.

A Gift to the BC Pooled Income Fund: You can make a gift of cash or securities of $5,000 or more to the Boston College Pooled Income Fund and receive income for life from your share of assets invested in the Pooled Income Fund. You receive an income tax deduction based on the Fund's remainder interest in your gift and avoid capital gains for gifts of stock transferred to the Fund.

A Charitable Gift Annuity: In exchange for a gift of cash or securities, Boston College can provide you with income for life through a Charitable Gift Annuity contract. The annuity rate is based on the age(s) of the annuitant(s), you and/or another person. When exchanging appreciated stock for a gift annuity, you incur no immediate capital gain tax on the transfer, part of the annuity payment will be tax-free, and you will receive an income tax deduction based on Boston College's remainder interest in the gift

A Gift in Trust: We are happy to work with you and your financial advisor to explore the options and benefits of creating a charitable trust arrangement which suits your unique circumstances and can provide you with income for life or a term of years. For example, you may choose a fixed or fluctuating payment, the rate of such payment, as well as many other features to suit your needs. You incur no capital gain tax on the transfer of appreciated assets (securities or real estate) and you receive an immediate income tax deduction for part of the gift. As with all life income plans, the funds are distributed to the University upon the death of the life income beneficiary(ies).

A Gift of a Personal Residence or Farm with Retained Use: It is possible to transfer ownership of your personal residence or farm to Boston College while retaining the enjoyment of the property for the remainder of your lifetime. This may be an excellent way to support the University, receive a current income tax deduction for the property's discounted value, and continue to use the property for as long as you live.

A Gift of a Life Insurance Policy: You can make a magnificent commitment to Boston College through the purchase of a life insurance gift. Through relatively modest annual gifts that are used to pay premiums on the policy, you can create a far greater gift than might otherwise be possible. By naming Boston College as owner and beneficiary of the policy, your annual premiums will be deductible for income tax purposes. Many people own insurance policies that are no longer needed for their original purposes. Such policies can be given to the University and you will be entitled to an income tax deduction for the cash surrender value and the amount of any future premiums paid.

A Gift of an Income Stream: You can provide annual payments to Boston College from a pool of assets that later will be distributed to your heirs. Known as a Charitable Lead Trust, this plan allows you to direct income payments to Boston College for a specific number of years. At the end of the trust's term, assets are transferred to family members at a reduced transfer tax.

A Gift Through Your Will: Boston College will honor your intentions to provide a charitable gift through your will to the University by offering recognition during your lifetime for the documented value of your bequest.

You should consult with your attorney and tax advisor to determine how these various options might affect your personal tax and estate planning objectives.
