Six Players Capture HOCKEY EAST Honors

CHESTNUT HILL - Senior defenseman Mike Mottau has earned HOCKEY EAST Co-Player of the Year honors, according to an announcement made at the league's annual pre-tournament banquet at the Royal Sonesta in Cambridge.
In addition, five more Boston College players captured All-League accolades. Senior forward Jeff Farkas and junior forward Brian Gionta joined Mottau as All-League first team selections. Senior forward Blake Bellefeuille and junior defenseman Bobby Allen captured All-HOCKEY EAST second team honors, while freshman forward Krys Kolanos earned All-Rookie Team honors.
Mottau, who has captured All-America honors in each of the last two seasons, enters the tournament's semifinal round as the league's top-scoring defenseman with 38 points - five goals and 33 assists. Earlier this season, he set the school records for career assists and career points by a defenseman. He currently has 152 career points, including 126 assists. He is one assist shy of the school's career assist record, currently held by David Emma (1987-91).
Mottau also established HOCKEY EAST career records for assists and points by a defenseman. In 96 regular-season league games, the senior registered 79 assists and 93 points. The previous marks were held by former Maine star Jack Capuano (1985-88), who had 64 assists and 90 points.
Mottau is the fifth Boston College player to capture the league's Player of the Year award. The previous recipients are: Scott Harlow (1986), Brian Leetch (1987), Greg Brown (1989 and 1990) and David Emma (1991).
Farkas ranks among the nation's leaders with 53 points - 28 goals and 25 assists - in 35 games. He finished as the league's third-leading scorer with 29 points - 17 goals and 12 assists - in 24 games.
Gionta, already a two-time All-America selection, enters the tournament's semfinal round with 49 points - 29 goals and 20 assists. His goal total ranks second nationally. In 24 HOCKEY EAST contests, he tallied 30 points, including a league-best 20 goals.
Bellefeuille has 44 points - 15 goals and 29 assists - in 35 games this season. He enters the tournament's semifinal round with a seven-game scoring streak. Last March, Bellefeuille captured HOCKEY EAST Tournament MVP honors after tallying six goals and three assists in four games, including the game-winning goal in the semifinal and title games.
Allen has 24 points - three goals and 21 assists - in 36 games this season. The junior captured All-Tournament honors at the 1999 HOCKEY EAST Tournament, registering one goal and five assists in four games.
Kolanos is the Eagles' fifth-leading scorer with 31 points in 36 games. He has collected 22 points - 15 goals and seven assists - in the last 18 games, including two hat tricks and two two-goal games.
Boston College (25-10-1) faces New Hampshire in the semifinal round of the HOCKEY EAST Tournament on Friday, March 17. Game time is 7 p.m. in Boston's FleetCenter.
