Men's Swimming And Diving Team Places 12th In Conference

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. -- Boston College placed 12th in the BIG EAST Conference's 13-team championship held February 17-19 in Uniondale, N.Y. Pittsburgh won the competition with 737 points. The Eagles were within striking distance of No. 11 Georgetown but fell 14 points short with 67 points.
On the first night of competition, Russ Keil (TIburon, Calif.) led off the 200-yard freestyle relay with an ECAC qualifying time of 21.72. Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.), Colin Feichtmeir (Mountain View, Calif.) and Chris Murphy (Westminster, Colo.) joined Keil to clock a season-best time of 1:25.76, moving up two spots from their12th seed to finish 10th.
In the 400 medley relay, Baker, Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.), Matthias Schildwachter (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) and Russ Keil teamed for a season-low time of 3:32.01. The same swimmers improved one place in the 200 medley relay, taking 11th (1:37.32).
Russ Keil, Matt Baker, Colin Feichtmeir and Fletcher Evans (Mercer Island, Wash.) captured 11th in the 400 freestyle relay with a time of 3:09.45.
Mike Wilt (Columbia, Conn.) finished 13th on the one-meter board, totaling 354.95 points.
Despite some difficulty, Matt Baker finished 27th with a time of 21.66 in the 50 free on the first day.
The next day, Greg Dwyer (Rochelle Park, N.J.) qualified for the ECAC competition starting Thursday (Feb, 24) with his 400 individual medley effort of 4:15.11, which landed him 23rd overall. Brian O'Neill (Reno, Nev.) was 25th in the same race (4:17.19).
BC had two alternate competitors for the second night's consolation and finals swims. Ken Barton placed 18th in the 100 breaststroke, swimming a season-best time of 58.72. In the same event, O'Neill earned a personal best time of 1:00.09, and Marc Manganiello (Norwich, Vt.) followed at 1:00.40 for 29th place.
Matt Baker was BC's other alternate, finishing 18th in the 100 backstroke with a time of 54.77. In the same event, Paul Callahan (Churchville, Penn.), Chris Murphy (Westminster, Colo.) and Jonathan Hartigan (Nova Scotia, Canada) were 21st (56.02), 23rd (56.86) and 26th (57.86), respectively.
The Eagles took places 26-28 in the 100 butterfly as freshman Matthias Schildwachter swam an impressive 52.70. Russ Keil and Jack Beierle (Rockford, Ill.) followed, clocking 53.07 and 53.29, respectively.
BC competes next at the ECAC championship in Rochester, N.J. Feb. 24-26.
