Boston College Prepares For Pittsburgh

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College enters Saturday's game at Pittsburgh with a 20-6 overall record and is ranked No. 19 in the Associated Press poll and No. 19 in the USA Today/ESPN poll...The Eagles have a 9-3 record in BIG EAST Conference action, with all of the losses coming on the road to No. 1 Connecticut (84-77) on January 26, No. 5 Notre Dame (72-59) on February 5, and Villanova (60-59) on February 12...Connecticut snapped the Eagles' 12-game winning streak, the longest in school history...Four of the Eagles' six losses were to ranked opponents, with three of the losses to teams ranked among the top five in the nation...The 12-game winning streak that started on December 4 with an 83-70 victory over Kent State included eight victories at Conte Forum...Boston College won the State Farm Classic at Gainesville, Florida on December 29, 1999...The Eagles played six of their first seven games on the road, and faced three teams ranked among the Top 25...Boston College has a perfect 12-0 record at Conte Forum this season, and currently has a 14-game home winning streak.

Pittsburgh enters Saturday's game with a 14-9 overall record and a 5-7 mark in BIG EAST Conference action. The Panthers have won three of their last six games, including an 84-56 victory over Seton Hall on February 16. Mandy Wittenmyer leads Pittsburgh in scoring with an average of 11.9 points per game. The freshman forward is also Pittsburgh's leading rebounder with 7.9 per game. Traci Waites, currently in her second year as the head coach at Pittsburgh, has a career record of 22-28. Waites served as the head coach at Santa Monica Community College for two seasons.

EAGLES vs. PANTHERS:
Boston College and Pittsburgh have played 33 games, and the Eagles lead the series, 18-15. The Eagles have won seven of the last eight games in the series, including an 85-54 victory in the first meeting of the season on January 29 at Chestnut Hill. Pittsburgh's last win in the series was on January 20, 1996, when the Panthers defeated the Eagles, 72-69, in Pittsburgh.

LAST MEETING (1/29/00):
Four Eagles scored in double figures, led by Alissa Murphy's season-high 24 points, to lead Boston College to an 85-54 victory over Pittsburgh on January 29 at Conte Forum. Cal Bouchard netted 19, Jamie Cournoyer scored 18, and Brianne Stepherson added 10 points for the Eagles. Monique Toney scored 13 points and Mandy Wittenmeyer added 10 to pace the Panthers. The Eagles shot 58.6 percent on the way to a 44-29 halftime lead.

The teams battled for the first six minutes before a three-pointer by Bouchard triggered a 33-10 Boston College run. After a 3-pointer by Murphy gave the Eagles a 33-21 edge, the lead fluctuated between 12 and eight points until Bouchard nailed a three-pointer with two seconds left in the half.

Boston College went on a 15-2 run midway into the second half to open its biggest lead of the game, 74-40, with just under 10 minutes left. It never fell below 22 points the rest of the way.

Misc. Notes: Nicole Conway started her fourth game of the season, tied her season-high of 28 minutes played, and handed out a career-high six assists. Senior Tish Few played a season-high eight minutes and registered a career-high three rebounds...Sophomore Kim Mackie missed the game with a sprained right ankle...Freshman Maureen Magarity returned to action after missing two weeks with a stress fracture in her right foot. She played one minute and grabbed one rebound...Alicia Shields played 21 minutes and tied her season-high of seven points.

LINEUP CHANGES:
Boston College has featured six different starting lineups this season due to a number of injuries. The starting lineup of Cal Bouchard, Brianne Stepherson, Alissa Murphy, Becky Gottstein, and Jamie Cournoyer registered a record of 12-3 in the first 15 games. Stepherson missed the game at Syracuse on January 3 with a muscle spasm in her neck and Nicole Conway was inserted into the starting lineup with Bouchard playing point guard. That starting lineup registered a 2-0 record with victories over Syracuse (71-62) and St. John's (67-50). Freshman Alicia Shields replaced Conway in the lineup against Providence on January 15 for her first collegiate start.

An injury to Gottstein forced another lineup change for the second game against the Friars on January 22. Sophomore Kim Mackie replaced Gottstein in the frontcourt. Stepherson returned to the starting lineup against Connecticut on January 26.

Although the backcourt tandem of Bouchard and Stepherson returned to anchor the Eagles, the frontcourt lineup changed in four games, due to a sprained ankle suffered by Mackie. The sophomore forward missed the game against Pittsburgh on January 29, and a sixth starting lineup of Murphy, Conway, Cournoyer, Bouchard, and Stepherson defeated the Panthers and Miami on February 2. Mackie returned against Notre Dame on February 5 and the lineup of the sophomore forward, Murphy, Cournoyer, Stepherson, and Bouchard has registered a 2-3 record.

INJURY UPDATE:
Becky Gottstein has missed the last eight games due to a stress fracture in her right ankle. The sophomore forward was evaluated by Dr. Diane English and a bone scan confirmed the stress fracture on January 18 that would keep her out of the lineup for a minimum of six weeks.

COURNOYER NAMED PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Jamie Cournoyer was named BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week on February 14, marking the fourth Boston College starter to earn the honor this season. The junior center averaged 26.0 points and 10.0 rebounds while shooting 72.4 percent (21-29) from the field in two games. Cournoyer scored a career-high 33 points in the 78-58 victory over Seton Hall on February 7, marking the best performance by a BIG EAST player this season. She registered her fourth double-double of the season at Villanova on February 12, scoring 19 points and grabbing 12 rebounds.

BIG EAST WEEKLY HONORS:
Four of the Boston College starters have earned BIG EAST Conference Player of the Week honors this season. Becky Gottstein was named BIG EAST Player of the Week three times, and Cal Bouchard, Alissa Murphy, and Jamie Cournoyer each earned the award once during the season. The BIG EAST Conference has selected players for the weekly honors 13 times this year, and the Eagles have earned the award six of the weeks.

LAST GAME (2/12/00):
Cal Bouchard hit six-of-eight three-pointers and finished with 25 points as No. 19 Boston College registered its second consecutive 20-win season with a 72-49 victory over Georgetown at Conte Forum on February 16.

Nok Duany led Georgetown with 13 points. Alissa Murphy scored 14 points and Brianne Stepherson added 10 points for Boston College, which has won all 12 home games this season, and outscored opponents at Conte Forum by an average of 22.6 points. The Eagles held guard Katie Smrcka-Duffy, the Big East's leading scorer, to just five points on two-for-16 shooting. She entered the game averaging 18.4 points per game.

The Eagles went on a 15-2 run over a 6:07 stretch in the first half to take control of the game. BC, which led 32-17 at halftime, broke it open with a 19-2 run late in the game, pushing to its largest lead, 68-38, on Stepherson's basket with 3:24 to play.

MISC. NOTES FROM GEORGETOWN WIN:
Cal Bouchard tied her career-high with six three-point field goals in the victory over Georgetown...Bouchard's 25-point performance marked her seventh game this season scoring over 20...Maureen Magarity came off the bench to play 27 minutes and register six points and a season-high four rebounds...Adriana Spears recorded four points in five minutes.

20-WINS:
Boston College registered its second consecutive 20-win season with the 72-49 victory over Georgetown on February 16. A year ago, the Eagles recorded the first 20-win season in school history and set the record for most victories with 22. Boston College reached the 20-win mark on February 23, 1999 with a 72-66 win over Pittsburgh in the final regular season game. The Eagles finished the season with a 22-8 overall record.

BOUCHARD INVITED TO 3-POINT CONTEST:
Cal Bouchard has been invited to compete in the Annual College Three-Point Basketball Championship during the Men's Final Four weekend in Indianapolis. The live event begins at 6:30 p.m., Thursday, March 30, and will appear on ESPN that same evening (9-11 p.m.). ESPN analyst Dick Vitale will host the telecast from Conseco Fieldhouse. The telecast is comprised of three events: the Annual Slam Dunk Championship, the Men's Three-Point Shooting Championship, and the Women's Three-Point Shooting Championship. Bouchard is currently leading the BIG EAST Conference in three-point field goals made per game (2.85 avg.). The senior captain tied her career-high with six three-point field goals against Georgetown on February 16.

NCAA STAT LEADERS:
Alissa Murphy and Cal Bouchard were listed among the nation's statistical leaders through games of February 14. Murphy was fourth in free throw percentage (88.7), after connecting on 102-of-115 attempts. Bouchard was 17th in three-point field goals made per game (2.7). The team was 11th in free throw percentage (75.5), connecting on 355-of-470 attempts.

HOME SWEET HOME:
The Eagles are 12-0 in games played at Conte Forum this season, and currently have a 14-game home winning streak. Boston College's streak dates back to February 17, 1999, when the Eagles defeated Villanova (64-39).

A year ago, Boston College finished the season with an 11-2 record in games played at home. The Eagles had a 10-game home winning streak snapped with the 66-53 loss to Miami on January 16, 1999. Boston College's other loss at home was on February 6, 1999 to No. 12 Rutgers (71-52). The 10-game winning streak included the final three home contests of the 1997-98 season.

EAGLES ON THE ROAD:
Boston College is 8-6 in games played away from Conte Forum this season. The Eagles played six of their first seven games on the road, and faced three teams ranked among the Top 25. In a span of 15 days, Boston College traveled to Maine, North Carolina, Illinois, and Arkansas, and returned with a road record of 3-3. The Eagles won both of their games at the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla. on December 28-29. Boston College's other road losses of the season were at No. 1 Connecticut on January 26, at No. 5 Notre Dame on February 5, and at Villanova on February 12. Senior Cal Bouchard leads the team and is third in the BIG EAST Conference with 16.0 points per game, followed by Alissa Murphy (13.5), and Jamie Cournoyer (11.9). Becky Gottstein averaged 13.1 points in the first 18 games before being sidelined with a stress fracture. Murphy is 11th in the BIG EAST in scoring.

CHARITY STRIPE:
Boston College is currently leading the BIG EAST Conference in free throw percentage (75.9), after connecting on 374-of-493 attempts from the line. Alissa Murphy leads the league in free throw percentage (88.4), and Cal Bouchard is third in the BIG EAST, shooting 85.1 percent from the line.

FORCE ON THE PERIMETER:
The Eagles are currently third in the BIG EAST Conference, shooting 36.6 percent (122-333) from three-point range and have a number of players that are a threat on the perimeter. Cal Bouchard is fourth in the BIG EAST Conference, shooting 46.0 percent (74-161). The senior captain leads the league in three-point field goals per game with 2.72. PERFECT FROM THE LINE:
Alissa Murphy, Cal Bouchard, and Jamie Cournoyer have all registered a number of perfect games from the free throw line this season. Bouchard leads the team with 15 perfect games. The senior captain connected on a season-high six attempts in the victory over Northwestern on December 19.

Murphy has registered 13 perfect games from the line. The senior guard's top performance of the season was at Maine on November 15 when she connected on all 12 free throw attempts. A year ago, she led the BIG EAST, and was third in the nation in free throw percentage (89.0). She was perfect from the line in 14 games last season.

Cournoyer has been perfect from the line in nine games. Her top performance of the season was against Duke on November 17, when she connected on all seven attempts from the line.

EAGLE CAPTAIN:
Senior Cal Bouchard will serve as the captain for the Boston College women's basketball team during the 1999-2000 season.

LEAGUE LEADERS:
Three Boston College players are among the league leaders in a number of statistical categories. Cal Bouchard is currently among the top five in four BIG EAST Conference statistical categories. The senior captain leads the league in three-point field goals per game (2.85), and is third in the league in scoring (16.0), third in free throw percentage (85.1), and fourth in three-point field goal percentage (46.0).

Alissa Murphy is leading the BIG EAST in free throw percentage (88.4), connecting on 107-of-121 attempts from the line. Jamie Cournoyer is currently fourth in the league in field goal percentage (53.5), connecting on 131-of-245 attempts, and fourth in blocked shots (1.72 avg).

CAREER NIGHT:
Jamie Cournoyer turned in the top scoring performance of her collegiate career in the 78-58 win over Seton Hall on February 7. The junior center scored a career-high 33 points and added eight rebounds, four blocks, two steals and two assists. She shot 81 percent from the field (13-16) and 87.5 from the line (7-8). Cournoyer's performance marked the most points scored by any BIG EAST player in a single game this season.

HEAD COACH CATHY INGLESE:
Head coach Cathy Inglese is currently in her seventh season at the helm of the Boston College women's basketball program. Inglese arrived at Boston College in 1993 after serving as the head coach at the University of Vermont for seven seasons. In seven seasons at BC she has registered a record of 106-87, and has a career record of 226-161. She recorded her 100th victory at Boston College on January 12, 2000 with a 67-50 win over St. John's. Inglese led the 1998-99 team to a 22-8 record, the most successful in school history, and was voted BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year.

During her stint at Vermont, she became the winningest college basketball coach in the nation over the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. Inglese's teams were undefeated in regular-season play in both 1991-92 (29-0) and 1992-93 (28-0), and became the only Division I men's or women's team to have back-to-back perfect records. She earned District I Coach of the Year and North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, and was a National Coach of the Year finalist all three years. A 1980 magna cum laude graduate of Southern Connecticut State College, Inglese was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

MURPHY NAMED CO-PLAYER OF THE WEEK:
Alissa Murphy was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on January 31 after averaging 20.0 points and 6.5 rebounds in two games. In the 85-54 victory over Pittsburgh on January 29, she finished with 24 points and nine rebounds. Murphy netted 16 points and four rebounds in the 84-77 loss at Connecticut on January 26. The senior guard shot 13-of-26 from the field and 11-of-11 from the free throw line in the two games.

500 REBOUNDS:
Alissa Murphy became the sixth Boston College player to score 1,000 points and register 500 rebounds during her collegiate career on January 29, when she registered nine rebounds in the 85-54 victory over Pittsburgh. The senior guard currently has 528 rebounds. Murphy became a member of the 1,000-point club on December 12, 1999, after scoring 23 points against Dartmouth.

1,000 POINTS:
Alissa Murphy joined Cal Bouchard as a member of the 1,000-point club, after scoring a season-high 23 points in the victory over Dartmouth on December 12, 1999. Both seniors reached the 1,000-point plateau this season. Bouchard netted 11 points on November 19, 1999 against Davidson and became the 11th Boston College player to score 1,000 points.

12-GAME WINNING STREAK:
Boston College's 12-game winning streak was snapped at Connecticut on January 26, when the Huskies defeated the Eagles, 84-77. The winning streak that started with an 83-70 win over Kent State on December 4, 1999 was the longest in school history. Prior to this year's 12 consecutive wins, the longest streak was seven games set a year ago. That streak started on December 8, 1998 and was snapped at Syracuse on January 13, 1999 when the Eagles lost to the Orangewomen, 73-70.

VICTORY MARGIN:
Boston College outscored opponents by an average margin of 18.3 points during the 12-game winning streak. The Eagles averaged 74.7 points per game and their opponents averaged 56.4. In non-conference action this season, the Eagles have outscored opponents by an average margin of 12.9 points.

ENDING THE CENTURY ON A HIGH NOTE:
Boston College ended 1999 with a perfect record in the month of December. The Eagles won all seven games by an average margin of 19.4 points and finished the month by capturing the State Farm Classic tournament title with victories over Maine and Florida.

DOUBLE-DOUBLES:
Four Boston College players have registered double figures in both scoring and rebounding in a single game a number of times this season. Becky Gottstein, Alissa Murphy, Jamie Cournoyer, and Kim Mackie have accounted for 14 double-doubles this season.

Murphy registered the first double-double of the season for Boston College on November 15 at Maine. The senior guard scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds in the victory over the Black Bears. Murphy recorded her second of the season against Dartmouth on December 12, with 23 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

Gottstein recorded double-doubles in seven games. The sophomore forward had 14 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia on November 21, and registered 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Illinois on November 22. Gottstein registered consecutive double-doubles against Kent State on December 4 (26 pts. and 16 rebs) and Villanova (23 pts., 15 rebs) on December 8. Gottstein notched two double-doubles in the two games at the State Farm Classic and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds against Maine on December 28 and added 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the championship game against Florida on December 29. Her seventh double-double included 17 points and 14 rebounds in a win St. John's on January 12.

Cournoyer has registered four double-doubles this season. She tallied her first of the season on January 12 against St. John's with 14 points and 11 rebounds and registered 14 points and 10 rebounds at Providence on January 22. Cournoyer recorded her third double-double at Miami on February 2 with 16 points and 12 rebounds. She also registered a double-double at Villanova on February 12 with 19 points and 12 rebounds.

Mackie registered the first double-double of her career against Kent State with a career-high 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

GOTTSTEIN'S WEEKLY HONORS:
Becky Gottstein earned BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week honors three times this season, before being sidelined with the stress fracture.

Gottstein earned her first BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week award on November 22 after averaging 13 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games for the Eagles. The sophomore forward scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the victory over Maine on November 15. Gottstein registered her first double-double of the season in the loss to No. 3 Georgia, netting 14 points and adding 11 rebounds.

She also was named BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week on December 13. The sophomore forward averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds in Boston College's victories over Villanova and Dartmouth. Gottstein scored 23 points (8-11 FG, 7-7 FT) and grabbed 15 rebounds in the victory over Villanova and netted 17 points (8-14 FG, 1-1 FT) and pulled down nine rebounds in the win over Dartmouth.

Gottstein was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on January 2. The sophomore forward earned the award after being named MVP at the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla. Gottstein registered double-doubles in both games at the tournament and shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the field.

TOURNAMENT CHAMPS:
Boston College won the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla., after defeating Maine (81-54) on December 28 in the first round and Florida (66-61) on December 29 in the championship tilt. The Eagles' victory over Florida marked only the second time in tournament history that the Gators did not win the annual classic. In 1991, Stephen F. Austin defeated Florida to take the title. Becky Gottstein's MVP award also marked only the second time that a Lady Gator did not win the tournament's top honor. Stephen F. Austin's Deneen Parker won the honor in 1991.

TOURNAMENT MVP:

Gottstein added 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the championship game against Florida.

MURPHY'S ALL-TOURNEY HONORS:
Alissa Murphy was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 19.0 points in the victories over Maine and Florida at the State Farm Classic. The senior guard led all scorers against Maine with 22 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 3-pt. FG, 7-7 FT). Murphy played all 40 minutes against Florida, tallied 16 points, connecting on 10-of-13 attempts from the line, and grabbed seven rebounds.

BOUCHARD EARNS WEEKLY HONORS:
Cal Bouchard was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on December 20 after scoring a season-high 25 points in the 86-55 win over Northwestern on December 19. The senior captain connected on seven-of-10 attempts from the field, including all five three-point field goal attempts, and was perfect from the line, connecting on all six attempts. In 28 minutes of play, Bouchard did not commit any turnovers.

STEPHERSON PUMPS IN 31 POINTS:
Brianne Stepherson turned in the top performance of her collegiate career in the 80-66 win over LaSalle on December 22. The sophomore guard scored a career-high 31 points (9-15 FG, 8-10 FT), including a career-high five three-point field goals. Stepherson also handed out a season-high six rebounds and tied her season-high of two steals.

PRESEASON WNIT:
The Eagles finished fourth in the Preseason WNIT after defeating Maine (83-56) and No. 22 Duke (77-70) in the first two rounds, but losing in the semifinals to No. 3 Georgia (78-70) and the consolation game to No. 13 Illinois (73-42). Boston College played all four games on the road.

WNIT HONORS:
Becky Gottstein was named to the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament team after averaging 12.5 points and 10.3 rebounds in the four games. The sophomore forward recorded two double-doubles, registering 14 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia, and 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Illinois. She netted 18 points in the victory over Maine.

PRESEASON ACCOLADES:
Boston College was ranked in both the preseason Associated Press (No. 19) and ESPN/USA Today Coaches Polls (No. 21) for the first time in school history.
