Powell Selected In WUSA Draft

Boston College All-America defender Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass./Natick HS) was selected by the Boston Breakers in the seventh round of the 2000 Women's United Soccer Association Draft.
The draft was conducted on Dec. 10 and 11, 2000. The Women's United Soccer Association (WUSA), which will become the top women's professional soccer league in the world, is scheduled to begin play in spring 2001.
Powell completed a distinguished collegiate career at Boston College this past fall. She played in and started all 82 matches in her four-year career, tallying four goals and three assists from her defensive position.
The senior back earned 2000 NSCAA All-America second team honors. She captured BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Year accolades as a senior, and gained 1999 and 2000 All-BIG EAST first team honors. Powell is also a two-time New England Regional All-America first team selection.
Powell anchored a Boston College defense that recorded 10 shutouts in 2000, including four in league divisional play. The defense allowed .99 goals per game and only 10.6 shots per game.
The Boston College women's soccer team finished the 2000 season with a 14-7 record, advancing to the semifinal round of the BIG EAST Championship Tournament.
