Swimming Drops BIG EAST Opener

STORRS, Conn.- University of Connecicut women's swimming and diving team (5-0, 2-0) used 11 first place finishes to defeat Boston College 178-122 at the Wolff-Zackin Natatorium in Storrs, CT on Wednesday, November 1. With the loss the Eagles fall to 2-1 on the season and 0-1 in the BIG EAST, with their league opener.
To start the meet, the Huskies got off to an early lead, winning the first six events. In the first event of the evening, Connecticut out touched Boston College by one tenth of a second (1:50.08) in the 200 medley relay. In the 200 freestyle the Huskies Lindsay Hansen (1:55.24) again out touched the Eagles' sophomore Nicole Duffy (1:55.83).
Junior Alexis Kostopoulos won the first of six first place finishes for the Eagles when she swam a 24.54 in the 50 freestyle, the best time in the event for any Eagle this season. After the diving break Boston College's Nina Suryoutomo, a sophomore, came back and won the 100 freestyle with a time of 53.38.
In the 500 freestyle, distance standout, Duffy out touched Connecticut's Katie Jelus by 15 hundredths of a second, finishing with a time of 5:09.71. Following, junior Lauren Schwartz won the 100 butterfly (59.21) and taking a close second was teammate freshman Lauren Keibler (59.65).
In the second diving event of the evening, senior captain Kristen Gray collected 237.60 points to win the 3 meter diving event, winning her fourth diving event this season.
The women's swimming and diving team will return to the pools when they host Northeastern University on Wednesday, November 8 in a meet schedule to begin at 6 p.m.
