Swimming Competes in Day One of the Patriot Invitational

FAIRFAX, Vir.-The Boston College men's and women's swimming and diving teams competed in the first of three days of competition at the Patriot Invitational, hosted by George Mason, in Fairfax, Vir, on Friday, Dec. 1, 2000. The Boston College women's team is currently seated in third place out of 12 teams, while the men are also in third, but out of nine teams.
In the 200 freestyle relay, junior Alexis Kostopoulos, sophomore Nina Suryoutomo, freshman Joanne Paleo and sophomore Caitlin Klick, took fourth out of 26 places, scoring 30 points for the Eagles. Boston College second relay finished in 12th. In the 500 freestyle, sophomore Nicole Duffy finished in 12th place with 5:08.71. Less than two seconds (5:08.98) later sophomore Caitlin Healy finished in 14th. In fourth place in the 200 individual medley, freshman Lauren Keibler finished in 2:08.70. Also scoring for the Eagles was junior Lauren Schwartz in 13th.
The highest finish for any Eagle, men or women, came in the 50 freestyle by Kostopouls with 24.13. Also for the Eagles in the 50 free, Suryoutomo finished in 9th and Paleo took 11th. Junior Brianne Sullivan, freshman Michelle Lane, Schwartz and Suryoutomo finished in third place in the 400 medley relay with a time of 3:57.35. The second Boston College relay took 11th place.
To begin the meet for the men's team, Sophomore Matt Baker, senior Chris Murphy, sophomore Maththias Schildwachter and senior Russ Keil finished in fourth place in the 200 freestyle relay. The highest finisher for Boston College in the 500-yard freestyle was freshman Joey Vansaun in 21st. Taking seventh place in the 200 individual relay, senior Paul Callahan finished with a time of 1:59.50. Also scoring in the 200 IM was freshman Andy Naumann in tenth place.
In the 50 freestyle, the Eagles took back-to-back places. Baker took fifth with 21.55 and Murphy finished in sixth with 21.71. In 13th, Keil also scored points. In another back-to-back finish for Boston College, the Eagles took sixth and seventh places in the 400 medley relay. Capturing fourth place in the one-meter diving, was lone BC diver, senior Mike Wilt collecting 438.75 points.
In first for the women is Washington State and Old Dominion is in first in the men's competition.
The Eagles will resume action in the Patriot Invitational tomorrow, Saturday, Dec. 2, 2000 in Fairfax, Vir.
