Men's Swimming Wins BIG EAST Opener

Providence, R.I.-The men's swimming and diving team used 160 points to Providence College's 70, to lead them to their first BIG EAST victory of the season in Providence, R.I. on Tuesday, November 7. With the win Boston College increases their winning streak over Providence to 6, leading the series between the two 13-5. The Eagle's improve their record to 3-1 overall and 1-0 in the BIG EAST.
Leading the Eagles with wins for the meet was senior Mike Wilt. Wilt collected two first place finishes, one in the one-meter and the other in the three-meter diving event with 180.15 and 252.38, respectively.
Beginning the evening the Eagles jumped out to an early lead taking first, third and fifth place in the 200-meter medley relay. The Friars then rallied back to take first in the next three event: the 800 freestyle, the 200 freestyle and the 50 free, which would prove to be the last wins for Providence.
Winning the first individual event for the Eagles, freshman Andy Naumann collected his second first place finish of the season - the other in the 200 breaststroke at Bridgewater-in the 200 individual medley (2:18.63).
After the first diving break, freshman John Sourbeer won his first collegiate meet of his career in the 200 butterfly (2:18.63). In the 100 freestyle, the Eagles took both the first and second spots. Winning was senior Russell Keil (56.37), followed closely by senior Chris Murphy (56.48).
In the last two events before the second diving break, sophomore Matt Baker won the 200 backstroke and freshman Gordon Glover took the 400 freestyle with 4:25.15.
In the last event of the evening, the Eagles took the first three spots in the 200 freestyle relay.
The men's swimming and diving will next compete against Yale University on Friday, November 17 at the Flynn Recreation Complex at 4:00 p.m.
