CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Junior forward Luke Earl's goal at 5:03 of the third period gave Yale a three-goal cushion and the Bulldogs withstood a late Boston College surge to gain a 4-3 non-league victory before a crowd of 4,428 fans at Kelley Rink.
The victory raised Yale's record to 2-0-0 on the season. Boston College, the nation's top-ranked team in the latest USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll, dropped to 7-2-0.
Yale sophomore Nick Deschenes opened the scoring at 8:59 of the first period and teammate Jeff Hamilton netted a power-play goal at 12:26 to give the Bulldogs a 2-0 lead after one period.
Senior Mike Lephart cut the BC deficit in half with a power-play goal at 5:30 of the second period, but Yale junior Jason Noe answered at 17:23 to give the visitors a 3-1 lead.
Earl extended the Yale advantage early in the final stanza, before the host Eagles made a comeback bid. Junior forward Jeff Giuliano scored at 11:47, and sophomore Krys Kolanos tallied his 10th goal of the season at 13:46 to bring BC to within one goal.
The Eagles applied pressure in the game's final minutes, including the final 1:27 when BC pulled sophomore goaltender Tim Kelleher to gain an extra skater. A Yale penalty with 58 seconds to play gave BC a 6-on-4 advantage, but Yale junior goaltender Dan Lombard met the challenge.
Kelleher finished with 23 saves for BC. Lombard earned the game's first star honor, making 38 saves.
