Tonight's Game Boston College steps out of the conference, traveling to Cambridge, MA to take on the Harvard Crimson at the Bright Hockey Center. The Eagles come into the game ranked third nationally in the USA Today/American Hockey Magazine poll, and fourth in the USCHO.com poll. BC lost its only game this season against an ECAC opponent, falling to Yale 4-3 on Nov. 7. Game time is 7 p.m.
The Series Boston College and Harvard have played 100 games in a series that began during the 1918-19 season. BC holds a 55-41-4 advantage. Under Head Coach Jerry York, the Eagles have a 6-2-1 mark. Last season the two teams met once, with BC defeating the Crimson 3-0 at Kelley Rink on Dec. 10. In that game Ales Dolinar scored two goals, including one short-handed tally, and Scott Clemmensen stopped all 24 Harvard shots to lead the Eagles to its second-straight shutout.
Gionta Enjoys Record-Setting Night vs. Merrimack The Eagles defeated Merrimack 7-2 on Tuesday, Nov. 21, but for captain Brian Gionta the night meant more than just a conference victory. For Gionta the game was a record-setting night. The senior forward set one league record, tied one school record and became the fourth player in Boston College history to reach the 100-goal plateau. Gionta's first goal - with the Eagles enjoying a 5-on-3 advantage - gave BC a 2-1 lead at 8:17 of the first period. His next two goals came at 3:23 and 3:33 of the third period, setting a HOCKEY EAST record for the fastest two goals by one player. His third goal was also the 100th of his collegiate career. With that goal, he joined David Emma (`91), Joe Mullen (`79) and Scott Harlow (`86) as the only BC players to reach that milestone. The hat trick was the eighth of Gionta's career, tying him with three others - Ray Chaisson (`41), Warren Lewis (`50) and Harlow - for the school record.
Coach York Joins 600-Win Club Jerry York is in his seventh season as the Eagles' head coach. He heads into tonight's game as the sixth-winningest coach in NCAA history. With the Eagles' 6-1 win at UMass-Lowell on Saturday, Nov. 4, York joined an elite group of five other coaches who have 600 or more career victories. His career record stands at 603-439-53 (.579). His record at Boston College is 136-94-19 (.591). In HOCKEY EAST games York's teams are 79-57-14 (.581). He has led his team to the NCAA Tournament eight times, including three consecutive appearances by Boston College in the Frozen Four (1998-2000). His 1983-84 Bowling Green squad finished 34-8-2 and won the national championship.
Voce Earns Second-Consecutive HOCKEY EAST Rookie of the Week Honor Tony Voce scored the game-winning goal in the Eagles' 6-1 win at Merrimack on Friday, Nov. 17, along with assisting on another score. The next night Voce scored the only BC goal in a 4-1 loss to New Hampshire. Four of Voce's goals have come in the last three games. He registered two goals in two minutes in a 5-3 BC win at Notre Dame on Friday, Nov. 10, then tallied single goals against Merrimack and New Hampshire. The last HOCKEY EAST player to earn back-to-back Rookie of the Week honors was current sophomore Krys Kolanos (weeks ending March 3 and 13, 2000).
Last Time Out for the Eagles Boston College's 7-2 win over Merrimack marked the team's 10th victory of the season and vaulted the Eagles into first place in the HOCKEY EAST standings. For Brian Gionta, the game was a record-setting night. Gionta set the HOCKEY EAST record for the fastest two goals by one player (10 seconds), tied BC's school record for hat tricks (eight) and became the fourth player in Boston College history to reach the 100-goal plateau. BC jumped out to a 3-1 lead after one period, a period in which the Eagles outshot Merrimack 26-6. The Eagles added one goal in the second and added the first three goals of the third frame, building a 7-1 advantage. Merrimack's Nick Parillo, who scored both of the Warriors' goals, finished the scoring at 16:43. Both teams used two goaltenders. Merrimack sophomore Joe Exter made 36 saves before Tom Welby entered early in the third period to make 13 stops. BC's Tim Kelleher made 19 saves, and classmate Tom Egan made one stop in his season debut.
Fast Starts for the Eagles Boston College has gotten off to fast starts in the majority of its games this season. Ten of BC's 20 first-period goals have been scored within the first nine minutes of the period, and three of those have been scored within the first 90 seconds. The Eagles have scored in the first 90 seconds of three of their last four games.
Eagles Road vs. Home Record With their 6-1 victory over Merrimack on Friday, Nov. 17, the Eagles ran their record away from Kelley Rink to 7-0. The 1968-69 team came the closest, winning its first six road games. In contrast to the Eagles' success on the road, BC's home record is 3-3.
