STORRS, Conn.- The Boston College men's tennis team defeated Connecticut by a score of 4-3 on Thursday afternoon. The Eagles began the afternoon by dropping the double's point, but came back strong to win four out of six singles matches and take the victory.
Four freshmen, Justin Slattery, Brad Anderson, Paul Colahan and Ross Pytko won their matches in singles to secure the team match playing at the first, third, fifth and sixth singles slots. Senior captain Jason Cowett and junior Marc Lucero fell in their matches, but the four singles wins guaranteed a very important win to keep the Eagles alive for the BIG EAST Championships on April 20-22, where only the top six teams advance to play in Miami.
The doubles team of Slattery and Cowett were the only Eagles to win in doubles 8-5, as the team of Anderson and Lucero and sophomore Damon Vartabedian with Pytko fell at the hands of the Huskies by scores of 8-5 and 8-3 respectively.
The Eagles have a 3-1 record overall and this was the final match before the team takes a winter break. In the spring, their first match will be at Army for the Military Invitational on Saturday, Feb. 3 at 9:00 a.m.
