PISCATAWAY, N.J. - With a spot in the BIG EAST field hockey championships at stake, Boston College traveled to Rutgers and ended its season with a 3-2 loss at the hands of the Scarlet Knights. The 13th-ranked Eagles concluded the season with a 10-8 overall record and a 2-3 league mark. All five goals in the game resulted from penalty corner situations.
Rutgers opened the scoring when Adrienne Booth picked up a deflected ball off Eagle keeper Jill Dedman's pads on a penalty corner and staked a 1-0 lead with 17:06 left in the first half. The Eagles matched the score on an unassisted tally by senior sweeper Morgan Brady resulting from a corner attempt with 17:47 left in the game.
Three goals in the final ten minutes of play determined the Eagles season. Rutgers opened a 2-1 lead with 9:53 left to play on a score by Becky Andrew on a direct hit in from pusher Leann Grondski and stopper Meredith Pizzulli. Boston College ties up the score with 6:01 to play on junior Amelie Wulff's score from Brady and senior Jen Hall. But the Scarlet Knights sealed their firs trip to the BIG EAST tournament in school history on Booth's second goal of the game with 2:41 remaining.

BIG EAST TOURNAMENT SELECTION: By virtue of a three way tie for third place in the BIG EAST standings, and only four spots in the post season tournament, the BIG EAST created a mini-conference with the ties teams - Syracuse, Boston College, Providence - to determine the final two spots. Connecticut and Rutgers will be seeded one and two, respectively, in the tournament.
All three teams in question had identical 2-3 league records. The first tiebreaker was each team's record against the other teams in the mini-conference. All three teams owned a 1-1 mark against each other. The second tiebreaker was each team's record against the teams ranked above them, starting with the first place team, Connecticut. Since the Huskies were 5-0 in league play, the teams' records were compared against the second-place team, Rutgers. Providence defeated Rutgers, while both Syracuse and Boston College lost. Since two teams were then left, the winner of the season's match up was invited to the tournament. Syracuse defeated Boston College, 4-0, earlier this season and earned the final berth in next weekend's tournament.
