DURHAM, N.H. - Margaret O'Neill scored her first career goal as the Eagles applied heavy pressure in the closing minutes, but the 15th-ranked Boston College field hockey team fell, 2-1, to New Hampshire this afternoon at Memorial Field in Durham.
New Hampshire got on the scoreboard first in the opening half as Jamie Ehret scored off Jessica Russell's pass. Russell faked a shot, bringing Eagle keeper Jill Dedman down, then passed out to Ehret for the score. The Wildcats mounted a 2-0 lead when Russell got the ball on a broken corner attempt. Eagle sweeper Morgan Brady stopped the initial shot cold off the corner, but Russell picked up the rebound and dribbled in for the score.
With 10:00 left to play, the Eagles mounted a furious attack and only allowed New Hampshire over the midfield line three times, hemming the Wildcats in their own end. O'Neill's goal was a result of the full-on assault as the Eagles kept pushing back the defense. However, Wildcat keeper Amy Agulay was up to the task and kept the Eagles off the board for the remainder of the game.
With the loss, Boston College dropped to 10-7 overall, while New Hampshire improved to 11-6. The Eagles will play their final regular season game of the season on Saturday, Oct. 28 at Rutgers. The game will determine the Eagles' seed at the BIG EAST Championship scheduled for Nov. 3-5 in Storrs, Conn.
