Three Boston College field hockey players have been honored by the BIG EAST Conference as players of the week for their play last week. In a 1-1 week that saw the Eagles fall at home in downpour conditions to 18th-ranked Harvard and beat Villanova, 2-0, for a vital win in the BIG EAST standings, Angela Hutchins, Morgan Brady and Jill Dedman were honored for their efforts.
Hutchins, a junior midfielder, was named Co-Offensive Player of the Week, sharing the honor with Brianne Wojnarowicz of Providence. The native of Wolfeboro, N.H, she scored both goals against Villanova to give the Eagles the 2-0 win. The victory secured the Eagles' place in their eighth consecutive BIG EAST tournament. She also led the team in shots with six in the game. The two goals gave her four on the season and eight in her career. The two-goal effort was also the second of her career. She is currently the team's fifth-leading scorer with four goals for eight points.
Brady, the team's sweeper, was named Defensive Player of the Week for the first time in her career. She anchored a defense that allowed just two goals this week, both against Harvard in storm conditions. She led the unit that also shutout Villanova, letting through only 15 shots. The senior team tri-captain, the New Milford, Conn. native played all but two games over the last two seasons. A major factor in the Eagles' defensive turnaround this season from last year's sub-.500 campaign, Brady is also the team's fourth-leading scorer with two goals and five assists for nine points.
Dedman has been honored as the league's Goalkeeper of the Week for the third time this season and eighth time in her career. This week, the BIG EAST Preseason Goalkeeper of the Year posted a 1-1 record including a league-leading sixth shutout of Villanova. She made 13 saves against the Wildcats. On Wednesday, the senior saved five shots in a loss to Harvard. The Orange, Conn. native has a 1.27 goals against average and a .859 save percentage in 16 starts this season.
The Boston College field hockey team is currently 10-6 on the season (2-2 in BIG EAST play) and ranked 13th in the most recent national STX/National Field Hockey Coaches Association poll. The team will next travel to 20th-ranked New Hampshire on Tuesday, Oct. 24, for a 3 p.m. game before closing out both the regular and conference seasons on the road against Rutgers on Saturday, Oct. 28, at 1 p.m. A win against the Scarlet Knights would put the Eagles in their eighth consecutive BIG EAST Championship.
