Field Hockey Tops Villanova On Senior Day
October 21, 2000 | Field Hockey
The 13th-ranked Boston College field hockey team defeated Villanova, 2-0, in a BIG EAST Conference match at Alumni Stadium. Junior Angela Hutchins netted both Eagle tallies to give Boston College a crucial win in the BIG EAST standings.
The Eagles staked a 1-0 lead with 21:00 remaining in the first half when senior Jen Hall fed Hutchins from the top of the circle. Hutchins, standing five yards out from the cage, spun around and put the ball in the goal while falling to the ground.
Hutchins would score again for the Eagles before the half was over. With 9:34 left, Hutchins took the rebound off of sophomore Virgina Drozd's long shot from outside the circle and put it in the goal for the Eagles' second and final score of the game. The Eagles took 14 shots on net in the first half, while Villanova failed to score, putting seven shots on the cage.
The second half of play saw no scoring as the Wildcats attempted to break though the Eagles' defense. Boston College keeper Jill Dedman saved 7 shots in the second half of play - 13 overall - to shut out the Wildcats. The clean sheet was her sixth this season and 18th-career blanking.
In pre-game activities, four Boston College seniors - Nichole Bukowski, Morgan Brady, Jill Dedman, and Jen Hall - were honored for their contributions to the Boston College Field Hockey program over their careers at the Heights. Coach Sherren Granese presented bouquets of flowers to the seniors.
This conference win boosts the Eagles to 2-2 in BIG EAST play and 10-6 overall on the season. The team will travel to New Hampshire on Tuesday, Oct. 24, for a 3 p.m. game.
