Boston College Prepares For Syracuse

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - STORY LINE: Boston College enters Sunday's game with a 12-3 overall record and currently has the longest winning streak in school history with eight consecutive victories. The Eagles are ranked No. 25 in the ESPN/USA Today poll, and returned to the Associated Press poll this week at No. 25 after dropping out of the Top 25 for four weeks. Boston College is 1-0 in BIG EAST Conference action with a win over Villanova (65-55) on December 8. The Eagles winning streak started on December 4 with an 83-70 victory over Kent State and includes six victories at Conte Forum. Boston College won the State Farm Classic at Gainesville, Florida on December 29, 1999. The Eagles played six of their first seven games on the road, faced three teams ranked among the Top 25, and registered a 3-3 record.
Syracuse enters Sunday's game with a 7-5 record. The Orangewomen are 0-1 in BIG EAST Conference action after losing to Providence (76-65) on January 4. Syracuse opened the season with four consecutive victories, but lost to Iowa (76-73) in the Hawkeye Challenge on November 28. The Orangewomen won three of their next five contests, but have a two-game losing streak entering Sunday's matchup. Three players are averaging double figures in scoring led by junior Beth Record's 18.3 points per game. Junior forward Leigh Aziz leads Syracuse in rebounding with 8.6 per game. Head coach Marianna Freeman has led Syracuse to a 51-115 record in seven seasons.
LONGEST WINNING STREAK:
Boston College enters the contest against Syracuse with an eight-game winning streak, the longest in school history. Prior to this year's eight consecutive wins, the longest streak was seven games set a year ago. That streak started on December 8, 1998 and was snapped at Syracuse on January 13, 1999 when the Eagles lost to the Orangewomen, 73-70. Boston College's current streak started on December 4, 1999 with an 83-70 victory over Kent State.
EAGLES vs. ORANGEWOMEN:
Boston College and Syracuse have played 33 times, and the Orangewomen lead the series, 18-15. The Eagles defeated Syracuse, 76-62, in the first meeting last season on January 5, 1999 in Chestnut Hill. Syracuse defeated Boston College, 73-70, in the second game of the season on January 13, 1999 at Manley Field House.

LAST MEETING (1/13/99):
Paula Moore scored 20 points and grabbed 10 rebounds and Ernestine Austin hit two key free throws down the stretch as Syracuse upset No. 21 Boston College, 73-70. The loss snapped a seven-game winning streak for Boston College, which entered the rankings the previous week for the first time in school history. Syracuse led by eight points with a little over a minute remaining before Boston College began to close the gap. Brianne Stepherson made a layup at 1:04 and Nicole Conway hit a 3-pointer with 53 seconds left, then added a jumper 32 seconds later as the Eagles pulled within two points. Austin hit one of two free throws during the Boston College run, and then connected on another free throw to make it a three-point game with seconds remaining. Conway's tying 3-point attempt hit the rim as the buzzer sounded. Syracuse was 16-of-27 from the free-throw line, while Boston College hit just 33 percent of their free throw attempts, going 5-of-15. Becky Gottstein scored 19 points and Alissa Murphy had 16 for the Eagles. Austin added 13 points and Beth Record 11 for Syracuse.

LAST GAME:
Sophomore Nicole Conway came off the bench to score a season-high 16 points and record five rebounds to lead Boston College to a 66-42 victory over Holy Cross at Conte Forum on January 3. Boston College held Holy Cross to just six field goals and 26.1 percent shooting in the first half. Senior captain Cal Bouchard opened the Eagle scoring with a three point basket, but Holy Cross scored six unanswered points and held a 6-3 lead with 14:50 remaining in the first half. Senior Alissa Murphy scored a basket at 14:03 to pull Boston College within one point. Boston College regained the lead when Conway's basket at the 11:58 mark gave the Eagles a 9-8 advantage. The Eagles went on a 13-0 run and held the Crusaders scoreless for eight minutes. Murphy extended the lead to 13 points on a jumper with :33 remaining in the half. Boston College led Holy Cross, 28-15, at intermission.
Boston College opened the second half with a 26-6 run and led Holy Cross, 57-21, with 8:59 remaining in the game. Holy Cross mounted a 13-1 run to bring the score to 58-34, but the Eagles held off the Crusaders' rally in the final minutes. Boston College improved to 7-0 at home with the 24-point victory.
Boston College was led by Conway's 16 points (5-7 FG, 6-6 FT) and Murphy's 12 points and six assists. Sophomore Becky Gottstein led the Eagles with 12 rebounds. Jeanette Paukert led Holy Cross in scoring with 13 points followed by Monika Rothemich with 10. Mary Rose Campbell was the leading rebounder for the Crusaders with six.
VICTORY MARGIN:
Boston College has outscored opponents by an average margin of 20 points in the last eight games. During the eight-game winning streak, the Eagles have averaged 76.9 points per game and their opponents have averaged 56.9.
ENDING THE CENTURY ON A HIGH NOTE:
Boston College ended 1999 with a perfect record in the month of December. The Eagles won all seven games by an average margin of 19.4 points and finished the month by capturing the State Farm Classic tournament title with victories over Maine and Florida. Boston College had never finished the month of December with an unblemished record.
GOTTSTEIN- PLAYER OF THE WEEK #3:
Becky Gottstein was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on January 2, marking the third time this season that she has won the award. The sophomore forward earned the award after being named MVP at the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla. Gottstein registered double-doubles in both games at the tournament and shot 52.4 percent (11-of-21) from the field.
Gottstein earned her first BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week award on November 22 after averaging 13 points and 9.3 rebounds in three games for the Eagles. The sophomore forward scored 18 points and grabbed nine rebounds in the victory over Maine on November 15. Gottstein registered her first double-double of the season in the loss to No. 3 Georgia, netting 14 points and adding 11 rebounds.
She also was named BIG EAST Conference Co-Player of the Week on December 13. The sophomore forward averaged 20 points and 12 rebounds in Boston College's victories over Villanova and Dartmouth. Gottstein scored 23 points (8-11 FG, 7-7 FT) and grabbed 15 rebounds in the victory over Villanova and netted 17 points (8-14 FG, 1-1 FT) and pulled down nine rebounds in the win over Dartmouth.
TOURNAMENT CHAMPS:
Boston College won the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla., after defeating Maine (81-54) on December 28 in the first round and Florida (66-61) on December 29 in the championship tilt. The Eagles victory over Florida marked only the second time in tournament history that the Gators did not win the annual classic. In 1991, Stephen F. Austin defeated Florida to take the title. Becky Gottstein's MVP award also marked only the second time that a Lady Gator did not win the tournament's top honor. Stephen F. Austin's Deneen Parker won the honor in 1991.
TOURNAMENT MVP:
Becky Gottstein notched two double-doubles in the two Boston College wins at the State Farm Classic and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. The sophomore forward scored 18 points (6-11 FG, 6-7 FT) and pulled down 12 rebounds against Maine in the first round victory. Gottstein added 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the championship game against Florida.
MURPHY'S ALL-TOURNEY HONORS:
Alissa Murphy was named to the all-tournament team after averaging 19.0 points in the victories over Maine and Florida at the State Farm Classic. The senior guard led all scorers against Maine with 22 points (6-10 FG, 3-4 3-pt. FG, 7-7 FT). Murphy played all 40 minutes against Florida, tallied 16 points, connecting on 10-of-13 attempts from the line, and grabbed seven rebounds.
HOME SWEET HOME:
The Eagles are 7-0 in games played at Conte Forum this season after defeating Davidson (86-54), Kent State (83-70), Villanova (65-55), Dartmouth (88-52), Northwestern (86-55), LaSalle (80-66), and Holy Cross (66-42), and currently have a nine-game home winning streak. Boston College's streak dates back to February 17, 1999, when the Eagles defeated Villanova (64-39).
A year ago, Boston College finished the season with an 11-2 record in games played at home. The Eagles had a 10-game home winning streak snapped with the 66-53 loss to Miami on January 16, 1999. Boston College's other loss at home was on February 6, 1999 to No. 12 Rutgers (71-52). The 10-game winning streak included the final three home contests of the 1997-98 season.
NCAA STAT LEADERS:
Alissa Murphy and Becky Gottstein were listed among the nation's statistical leaders through games of January 3. Murphy was 20th in free throw percentage (87.7), after connecting on 64-of-73 attempts. Boston College was 18th in the nation in free throw percentage (74.9). Gottstein was 23rd in the nation in rebounding with an average of 10.1 per game.
CHARITY STRIPE:
Boston College is currently leading the BIG EAST Conference in free throw percentage (74.9), and is 18th in the nation, after connecting on 233-of-311 attempts from the line. Alissa Murphy leads the team in free throw percentage (87.7), followed by Cal Bouchard (84.2), Nicole Conway (83.3), and Jamie Cournoyer (80.0).
Murphy has been perfect from the line in eight games, including the victory at Maine on November 15, connecting on all 12 free throw attempts. A year ago, she led the BIG EAST, and was third in the nation in free throw percentage (89.0). Murphy was perfect from the line in 14 games last season. Bouchard has been perfect from the line in seven games.
BALANCED SCORING:
Three of the Boston College starters are currently averaging double figures in scoring. Senior Cal Bouchard leads the team with 14.5 points per game, followed by Alissa Murphy (13.2), and Becky Gottstein (12.6).
FORCE ON THE PERIMETER:
The Eagles are currently shooting 34.9 percent (68-195) from three-point range and have a number of players that are a threat on the perimeter. Cal Bouchard is seventh in the BIG EAST Conference, shooting 42.5 percent (37-87). Alissa Murphy is shooting 36.7 percent (18-49), followed by Danielle O'Banion (36.4). Brianne Stepherson has connected on seven-of-26 attempts (26.9) from three-point range this season. The sophomore point guard connected on five-of-six attempts in the victory over LaSalle on December 22.
EAGLES ON THE ROAD:
Boston College is 5-3 in games played away from Conte Forum this season. The Eagles played six of their first seven games on the road, and faced three teams ranked among the Top 25. In a span of 15 days, Boston College traveled to Maine, North Carolina, Illinois, and Arkansas, and returned with a road record of 3-3. The Eagles won both of their games at the State Farm Classic in Gainesville, Fla. on December 28-29. A year ago, the Eagles finished with a 9-5 record on the road.
EAGLES vs. RANKED TEAMS:
Boston College is currently 1-2 against ranked teams this season after playing three teams in the Top 25 during the Preseason WNIT. The Eagles defeated No. 22 Duke (77-70) on November 17, but lost in the semifinals to No. 3 Georgia (78-70) and to No. 13 Illinois (73-42) in the consolation game.
The Eagles have only registered five wins ever over teams ranked in the Top 25. A year ago, Boston College defeated two teams in the Top 10 for the first time in school history. The Eagles upset No. 2 Connecticut (78-66) on January 23 and No. 7 Notre Dame (78-65) on December 30, 1998, at Chestnut Hill.
HEAD COACH CATHY INGLESE:
Head coach Cathy Inglese is currently in her seventh season at the helm of the Boston College women's basketball program. Inglese arrived at Boston College in 1993 after serving as the head coach at the University of Vermont for seven seasons. In seven seasons at BC she has registered a record of 98-84, and has a career record of 218-158. Inglese led the 1998-99 team to a 22-8 record, the most successful in school history, and was voted BIG EAST Conference Coach of the Year.
During her stint at Vermont, she became the winningest college basketball coach in the nation over the 1991-92 and 1992-93 seasons. Inglese's teams were undefeated in regular-season play in both 1991-92 (29-0) and 1992-93 (28-0), and became the only Division I men's or women's team to have back-to-back perfect records. She earned District I Coach of the Year and North Atlantic Conference Coach of the Year honors in 1990-91, 1991-92, 1992-93, and was a National Coach of the Year finalist all three years. A 1980 magna cum laude graduate of Southern Connecticut State College, Inglese was inducted into the school's Athletic Hall of Fame.

1,000 POINTS:
Alissa Murphy joined Cal Bouchard as a member of the 1,000-point club, after scoring a season-high 23 points in the victory over Dartmouth on December 12, 1999. Both seniors reached the 1,000-point plateau this season. Bouchard netted 11 points on November 19, 1999 against Davidson and became the 11th Boston College player to score 1,000 points.
BOUCHARD EARNS WEEKLY HONORS:
Boston College has produced a BIG EAST Player of the Week four of the seven times that the honor has been awarded this season. Becky Gottstein has earned the award three times and Cal Bouchard was named BIG EAST Co-Player of the Week on December 20 after scoring a season-high 25 points in the 86-55 win over Northwestern on December 19. The senior captain connected on seven-of-10 attempts from the field, including all five three-point field goal attempts, and was perfect from the line, connecting on all six attempts. In 28 minutes of play, Bouchard did not commit any turnovers.

STEPHERSON PUMPS IN 31 POINTS:
Brianne Stepherson turned in the top performance of her collegiate career in the 80-66 win over LaSalle on December 22. The sophomore guard scored a career-high 31 points (9-15 FG, 8-10 FT), including a career-high five three-point field goals. Stepherson also handed out a season-high six rebounds and tied her season-high of two steals.
EAGLE CAPTAIN:
Senior Cal Bouchard will serve as the captain for the Boston College women's basketball team during the 1999-2000 season.
DOUBLE-DOUBLES:
Becky Gottstein, Alissa Murphy, and Kim Mackie have accounted for nine double-doubles this season. Murphy registered the first double-double of the season for Boston College on November 15 at Maine. The senior guard scored 16 points and added 10 rebounds in the victory over the Black Bears. Murphy recorded her second of the season against Dartmouth on December 12, with 23 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.
Gottstein has recorded double-doubles in six games. The sophomore forward had 14 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia on November 21, and registered 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Illinois on November 22. Gottstein registered consecutive double-doubles against Kent State on December 4 (26 pts. and 16 rebs) and Villanova (23 pts., 15 rebs) on December 8. Gottstein notched two double-doubles in the two games at the State Farm Classic and was named the Most Valuable Player of the tournament. She scored 18 points and pulled down 12 rebounds against Maine on December 28 and added 11 points and grabbed 14 rebounds in the championship game against Florida on December 29.
Mackie registered the first double-double of her career against Kent State with a career-high 17 points and a career-high 11 rebounds.

FRONTCOURT DOMINATES:
The trio of Becky Gottstein, Kim Mackie, and Alissa Murphy combined to score 32 of Boston College's 38 points in the first half of the 83-70 victory over Kent State on December 4. Both Gottstein and Mackie finished the game with double-doubles. Gottstein scored a career-high 26 points and tied her career-high of 16 rebounds to record her third double-double of the season and 10th of her career. Mackie netted a career-high 17 points and grabbed a career-high 11 rebounds. Murphy tied her career-high of eight assists.
STREAK SNAPPED:
Alissa Murphy's streak of 37 consecutive games scoring in double figures was snapped on November 22 in the loss at Illinois. The senior guard netted only six points in the loss. The streak had dated back to February 24, 1998, and included all 30 games from the 1998-99 season.

The Eagles finished fourth in the Preseason WNIT after defeating Maine (83-56) and No. 22 Duke (77-70) in the first two rounds, but losing in the semifinals to No. 3 Georgia (78-70) and the consolation game to No. 13 Illinois (73-42). Boston College played all four games on the road.
WNIT HONORS:
Becky Gottstein was named to the Preseason WNIT All-Tournament team after averaging 12.5 points and 10.3 rebounds in the four games. The sophomore forward recorded two double-doubles, registering 14 points and 11 rebounds against Georgia, and 12 points and 10 rebounds in the loss to Illinois. She netted 18 points in the victory over Maine.
BIG EAST STAT LEADERS:
A number of Eagles are listed among the statistical leaders in the BIG EAST Conference. Three starters were among the top 15 in scoring in the league through games of January 6. Cal Bouchard was 10th (14.5) in scoring, followed by Alissa Murphy (13th-13.2), and Becky Gottstein (14th -12.6). Gottstein leads the league in rebounding with an average of 10.1.

BENCH CONTRIBUTES IN DAVIDSON WIN:
The players off of the bench accounted for 24 points and 17 rebounds in the 86-54 win over Davidson on November 19. Nicole Conway scored 10 points in the win over the Wildcats. All three freshmen made a strong contribution in the Eagles' third victory of the season. Alicia Shields played 21 minutes and registered five points, three rebounds, and two steals. Adriana Spears pulled down six rebounds, scored three points, and added two blocks in 18 minutes. Maureen Magarity played nine minutes and scored two points.
COURNOYER'S CAREER NIGHT:
Jamie Cournoyer scored a career-high 21 points to lead the Eagles to a 77-70 victory at Duke on November 17. The junior center hit seven-of-11 shots from the field and was a perfect seven-of-seven from the line. Cournoyer also registered six rebounds and three blocked shots in her second start of the season.
