CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass./Natick) was named Honorable Mention All-American by both Soccer Buzz and College Soccer Online last month (Dec.).
Soccer Buzz placed the BC sweeper on its All-Regional team at the conclusion of the 1999 season. Powell was also one of five Eagles to earn regional recognition from the NSCAA/Adidas committee in addition to a NEWISA All-New England First Team distinction. She was BC's lone representative on the BIG EAST Conference's First Team.
Powell anchored a BC defense that ranked 18th nationally in shutouts per game (12 shutouts in 24 games) at the end of the 1999 season. She also contributed offensively, footing the game-winning goal against Brown to end the season with four points.
"I am very happy to see Sarah receive such a prestigious accolade, it is well deserved. She is definitely well known nationally in the soccer world now, and it will be exciting for us all to watch her excel and accomplish even more next year," Coach Alison Foley said.
BC finished its season at 16-7-1 after participating in the third round of the NCAA Tournament for the first time in the program's history. The Eagles suffered a 5-0 loss to host Connecticut Nov. 20 in the 'Sweet 16,' after defeating Harvard 1-0 (Nov. 14) in Cambridge. The Eagles knocked out Fairfield 4-1 in the NCAA's first round Nov. 10 in Newton, Mass.
