CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College junior sweeper Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass./Natick) was named BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week for the period of Aug. 30 - Sept. 5.
The Eagles (1-1) opened up their 1999 season with a win and a loss this weekend (Sept. 4-5) at the University of Hartford Tournament. They shutout Fairfield 2-0 Saturday then suffered a 1-0 overtime loss in 102 minutes of play to the host Hartford Hawks Sunday.
Powell assisted on Morgan Page's late-game goal in the Eagles' victory over Fairfield. The Stags outshot BC 14-11 forcing Eagles goalkeeper Courtney Schaeffer to make nine saves.
The Natick native also helped the BC defense withstand a 19-shot attack from the Hawks in the overtime loss Sunday.
In August, Powell was voted a 1999 preseason All-BIG EAST team pick by the conference coaches. Boston College was picked to finish third in the Northeast Division in the same poll.
BC meets Dartmouth at 1 p.m. Sunday Sept. 12 in Hanover, N.H.
