CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Mary Guarino (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) and Morgan Page (Westerly, R.I./Westerly) each added a tally to give Boston College (1-0) a 2-0 season-opening victory over Fairfield University Saturday in Hartford, Conn.
Guarino and Page, the Eagles' top scorers a season ago, began the 1999 campaign as they ended last season. The two combined for 60 points in 1998, highlighted by Page's 16 goals and Guarino's 11 assists. On Saturday, Guarino struck first, receiving a feed from Katie Murphy (South Windsor, Conn./South Windsor) outside of the box then beating the goalkeeper on the right side in the 61st minute. Page received sweeper Sarah Powell's (Natick, Mass./Natick) long ball in the 87th minute to break away and deposit the insurance goal.
BC goalkeeper Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) made nine saves for the 17th shutout of her three-year career at the Heights.
