CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - The Boston College women's soccer team was picked to finish third in the BIG EAST conference's Northeast Division, according to a preseason coaches poll released Aug. 13. The conference coaches selected Connecticut to win the division with Syracuse second. Notre Dame was chosen as the Mid-Atlantic's preseason champion, preceding No. 2 Seton Hall and No. 3 West Virginia.
The Eagles' junior sweeper Sarah Powell (Natick, MA/Natick) was named to the preseason All-BIG EAST team after garnering Second Team honors and Second Team All-America distinction a season ago. Powell posted two goals and one assist in 1998 while helping BC to a 12-6-3 record and fifth-place conference finish.
Seton Hall's Kelly Smith and Notre Dame's Jen Grubb were selected as the Offensive and Defensive Player-of-the-Year recipients, respectively. Grubb's teammate LaKeysia Beene was voted Goalkeeper of the Year. All three players won their respective awards at the conclusion of the 1998 regular season.
Conference play begins on Aug. 28 when Villanova hosts Syracuse. The top four teams in each division will qualify for the BIG EAST championships. Quarterfinal games will be held on campus sites on Nov. 2, while the semifinal and final matches will be held at Rutgers Soccer Stadium in Piscataway, N.J. on Nov. 5 & 7.
