Tow Leads Women's Tennis at Brown Invitational

PROVIDENCE, R.I. - Sophomore Cynthia Tow finished second in Flight A singles and teamed with classmate Kiren Fernando to capture the Flight B doubles title as Boston College fared well in the 1998 Brown Tennis Invitational in Providence, R.I.
Tow earned wins over opponents from Seton Hall, Harvard and Brown in singles play, before dropping a three-set decision to Virginias Paige Boiko in the championship match.
In doubles action, Tow and Fernando defeated doubles pairs from Providence, Boston University and Dartmouth to capture the Flight B title.
Freshman Ruta Veitas earned a strong third-place finish in Flight C singles. She downed Brown and Boston University foes, before losing to Virginias Amy ODonnell in the semifinals. She gained the third-place finish with a win over BUs Mary Granger.
Juniors Mercedes del Valle and Kim Arbuckle both finished with 4-1 record in their singles flights and won the consolation finals. Del Valle defeated Browns Julia Martynova in the first round of Flight B, but lost to Dartmouths Sarita Yardi in the quarterfinals. She rebounded with wins over Seton Hall, Boston University and Brown (a rematch with Martynova).
Arbuckle lost to a Virginia foe in the first round of Flight C, but then won four consecutive matches (against Harvard, Brown and two Dartmouth opponents).
Boston College returns to action at the 1998 ECAC Womens Invitational Tennis Championship on October 16-18.
