
Three BC Hockey Players Selected in 1998 NHL Entry Draft

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Three members of the 1998-99 Boston College hockey team -- sophomore defensemen Bobby Allen (Hull, Mass./Cushing Academy) and Rob Scuderi (Bethpage, N.Y./St. Anthonys), and sophomore forward Brian Gionta (Rochester, N.Y./Aquinas Institute) -- were selected in the 1998 NHL Entry Draft that was held in Buffalo, N.Y. on Saturday, June 27.
Allen was selected by the Boston Bruins in the second round (52nd overall). Gionta was selected by the New Jersey Devils in the third round (82nd). Scuderi was selected by the Pittsburgh Penguins in the fifth round (134th).
A 6-foot-1-inch, 198-pound defenseman, Allen was a 1997-98 HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team selection. He registered 28 points in his first year at Boston College. He played in 40 of the teams 42 games, missing two games because of a separated right shoulder. He was selected to the 1998 U.S. National Junior Team, but missed the tournament because of his injury.
A 5-foot-7-inch, 160-pound forward, Gionta earned 1997-98 Titan All-America second team honors. He also captured HOCKEY EAST and New England Rookie of the Year honors. Gionta led the nations freshmen in scoring in his first year at Boston College (30 goals, 32 assists). He has been invited to the 1998 USA Hockey Summer Challenge that will be held in Lake Placid, N.Y. this August. Gionta is one of nine players invited to the challenge who played on the 1998 U.S. National Junior Team.
A 6-foot-1-inch, 194-pound defenseman, Scuderi earned 1997-98 HOCKEY EAST All-Rookie Team honors. He tallied 24 points -- all on assists -- in 42 games in his freshman season at Boston College. He was one of five BC players to play in all of the teams games en route to the national championship game.
