CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Boston College women's soccer players Sarah Powell (Natick, Mass./Natick) and Mary Guarino (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) were recognized on the BIG EAST All-Conference teams. Powell earned First Team honors after garnering Second Team accolades in 1998. Guarino, distinguished for the first time in her four-year career, received a spot on the Second Team.
Both athletes led BC to its best record (14-6-1) in Head Coach Alison Foley's three-year tenure. BC finished third (regular season) in the Northeast Division of the BIG EAST conference. In the conference semifinals held Nov. 5, Connecticut, ranked 13th in the NSCAA, defeated BC 2-1 in overtime. The Eagles host Fairfield Wednesday (Nov. 10) in the first round of the NCAA Tournament. It will mark BC's first appearance in the tourney since 1985.
Guarino, who was ranked 19th nationally in points per game (2.50) through Sept. 25, led all Eagle attackers this year with 15 goals and eight assists to date with seven game-winning goals in addition to a golden 80 career points. Guarino earned BIG EAST Offensive Player of the Week twice in 1999.
Powell, a junior sweeper, helped BC to eleven shutouts in 1999. In the NCAA's two final polls, BC was listed among the nation's leaders. In a poll released Oct. 31, the Eagles were ranked 19th in team goals against average (0.77) and 9th in shutouts per game, moving up from a 16th-place showing the previous week. Powell contributed to BC's offensive cause with a goal - game-winner vs. Brown - two assists. She was named Defensive Player of the Week three times during the season.
