CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Niagara University scored three times in the final period to skate past Boston College 5-1 in the first of a two-game series over the weekend in Chestnut Hill. The two teams face off Sunday (Nov. 28) in Kelley Rink. Game time is at 2 p.m.
Stephanie Romain (Aylmer, Quebec) converted a short-handed goal with assists from Brooke Bradburn (Brampton, Ontario) and Barbara Prall (Hull, Mass.) at the 7:02 mark of the third period. One second after Niagara skated at full strength, Romain netted her second goal of the game (7:53), receiving an assist from Amanda Greer (Niagara Falls, N.Y.). Defensewoman Linda Groff (Amherst, N.Y.) deposited the insurance goal at 11:10 in the final period to secure the 5-1 victory.
Julie Forsyth (Mississauga, Ontario) broke 15 minutes of scoreless play, capitalizing on 5-3 power-play opportunity to open up the game's scoring at 15:19 in the first period Sophomore forward Jessica Tennier (Niagara Falls, Ontario) had an assist on that goal. Left wing Candice Ceelen (Milton, Ontario) scored the Purple Eagles' second goal with a man advantage, 9:44 into the second period.
With BC short handed, Gena Nolin (Chichester, N.H.) got by the Niagara defense, faked a shot then top-shelved her goal from just outside the crease, 10:51 into the second period. That was only one of two BC shots that the Purple Eagles allowed in the second period.
Netminder Christy Nentwig (Chesterfield, Mo.) collected 48 saves in her complete-game effort for BC. Her Purple Eagle counterpart, Tania Pinelli (Hamilton, Ontario), had 18 saves for the win.
