Swimming And Diving Teams Finish Second At Can-Am Challenge

CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - Both Boston College swimming and diving teams finished second in their respective 10-team fields at the Can-Am Challenge hosted by the University of Sherbrooke held Nov. 5-6. The women's squad posted 836.5 points, second only to Connecticut's 999.5 points, while the men tallied 488 points, 430 points behind first-place Connecticut.
First-year swimmer Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) helped out the women's cause with four, top-5 finishes. Suryoutomo won the 100-meter freestyle, swimming 59.44 while placing second in both the 50 back (31.53) and 50 free (27.43). She also was fourth in the 100 back (1:08.80).
Fellow frosh Christa Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) placed third twice, clocking 2:27.70 in the 200 butterfly and 4:35.33 in the 400 free. She was also sixth in the 400 individual medley (5:17.79). Their classmate, Nicole Duffy (Chesterfield, Mo.) garnered three finishes in the top-3. She was second in the 400 free (4:30.67) and 200 free (2:10.30), and third in the 100 free (1:00.81).
Sophomore Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.) finished in the event's top-10, five times. She was fourth in the 400 IM (5:15.75), fifth in the 100 fly (1:08.48) and sixth in the 200 fly (2:30.00). She also finished seventh in the 200 IM (2:29.38) and eighth in the 50 fly (31.32).
Brianne Sullivan (Staten Island, N.Y.) earned third, fourth and fifth, swimming the 100 back (1:08.61), 200 back (2:27.82) and 50 back (32.10), respectively.
Fellow backstroker Melissa Pierce (The Woodlands, Texas) totaled a pair of thirds, clocking 31.77 in the 50 back then swimming 2:24.69 in the 200 back. She was also sixth in the 100 back (1:09.72).
Kara Glynn (Branford, Conn.) swam 9:33.48 to place second in the 800 free. The sophomore was also eighth in the 400 free with her time of 4:40.03.
Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) finished seventh in both the 50- (35.93) and 100-meter breaststroke (1:19.02) events. Her classmate Lauren Ohtake (Honolulu, Hawaii) was sixth in the 100 fly, concluding her race at 1:08.74.
On the men's side, James Pollack (Westfield, N.J.) drew a negative split in the last 750 meters of his 1500 meter freestyle to place fifth overall with a time of 18:02.94. The freshman was also ninth in the 400 free (4:27.33).
Breaststroker Ken Barton (Meridien, Conn.) finished fifth in the 50 breaststroke (32.18) then came in sixth in the 100-meter version with a time of 1:10.23.
Matt Baker (Lakewood, Wash.) tied for seventh in the 50 back (29.68), then earned eighth all alone in the 50 free (25.43) behind teammate Russell Keil (Tiburon, Calif.), who placed seventh at 25.37.
Freshman John Beierle (Rockford, Ill.) clocked 2:21.26 for seventh in the 200 fly while Nicholas Riolo (San Jose, Calif.) was eighth (2:21.60) in the same event.
Senior Greg Dwyer (Rochelle Park, N.J.) was eighth in the 100 back (1:04.79) and seventh in the 400 IM (4:53.89).
