CHESTNUT HILL, Mass. - - Boston College won seven of its final nine events to race past Army 164-135 in a women's swimming and diving meet at Crandall Pool on Sunday afternoon. Boston College improved to 1-2 while Army slipped to 1-3.
The Cadets sprinted to a 29-7 lead after two events, winning the medley relay then taking a 1-2-3 sweep in the 1000 freestyle.
Army still led 68-63 after Heidi Borden's win in the 50 free in the meet's seventh event. Borden set another meet record with a time of 24.42.
The Cadets captured only two more events the rest of the way, however, and the Eagles took the lead for good when Kristen Gray and Shannon Lents claimed the top two spots in the one-meter diving.
Army took 1-2 in the 500 free to bring Army within 119-107 with four events to go, but Boston College swept the 100 butterfly and 200 individual medley and won first and second in the three-meter diving to put the meet out of reach.
Lauren Schwartz (Mt. Laurel, N.J.), Melissa Pierce (The Woodlands, Texas) and Alexis Kostopoulos (Marblehead, Mass.) won two events apiece for BC. Schwartz outpaced the 200-yard butterfly (2:08.56) and 100 fly (59.07) fields. Pierce finished first in the 200 free (1:55.86) and 200 backstroke (2:07.28) events. Kostopoulos won both of her breaststroke events, swimming 1:07.45 in the 100 and 2:27.39 in the 200. Kristen Gray (West Boylston, Mass.) finished first (241.42) in the one-meter diving while Shannon Lents (Boca Raton, Fla.) finished second (230.17). The two reversed places in the three-meter event as Lents totaled 241.65 and Gray had 239.70.
Both Nina Suryoutomo (Fremont, Calif.) and Nicole Duffy (Chesterfield, Mo.) earned victories in their respective events. Suryoutomo won the 100 free (53.30), and Duffy conquered the 200 individual medley field (2:12.56) while finishing second in the 200 free (1:56.57). Christa Ehlers (Bay Shore, N.Y.) was second to Schwartz in the 200 fly (2:11.00).
