Chestnut Hill, Mass. - - Four different Husky players scored to lead Connecticut 5-0 over Boston College in the third round of the NCAA Tournament Saturday in Storrs, Conn. UConn will play the winner of the Santa Clara and UCLA match. That fourth round game will be held the weekend of Nov. 27. BC, which had never advanced beyond the second round of the NCAA tournament in the program's history, concluded its season at 16-7-1 while the Huskies improved to 17-7-0.
BC dominated the game's first 10 minutes as Mary Guarino (Plantation, Fla.) created two shots in that skein, including a rocket that UConn goalkeeper, Maria Yatrakis, slapped over the crossbar.
UConn capitalized on its first two shots of the game as Casey Zimny, fed by Alexa Borisjuk, netted a goal which BC goalkeeper Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) caught but fell behind the goal line at the 10:31 mark. Just over a minute later, Mary-Frances Monroe redirected Jen Carlson's pass to give the Huskies a two goal lead. Salla Ranta gave UConn a 3-0 advantage before halftime, launching a rocket inside the far post from 18 yards out in the 25th minute after stealing an errant pass from BC's defense.
The fourth goal was a BC own goal in the 58th minute. Jen Amaio came off the bench to receive a pass from Lacey Toups in the box behind the out-of-position BC goalkeeper, Alice Lehne (Troy, Mich.) for the Huskies' last score in the 73rd minute..
Both Janice Collein (Garden City, NY) and Rachael Klemanski (Farmington, Conn.) saved further scoring with each making a defensive save in each half.
