CAMBRIDGE, Mass. - For the first time ever, Boston College advanced to the third round of the NCAA Tournament by virtue of a 1-0 victory over eighth-seeded Harvard at Ohiri Field Sunday. The last time BC beat Harvard was a 3-1 win Oct. 1, 1991. Senior Mary Guarino (Plantation, Fla./St. Thomas Aquinas) scored the game-winning tally at the 43:45 mark as the Crimson - - despite outshooting the Eagles 23-11 - - was unable to net the equalizer. BC will play the Connecticut Huskies Saturday (Nov. 20) at noon in Storrs, Conn., who advanced by downing Dartmouth 3-0 Saturday (Nov. 13).
Courtney Schaeffer (South Huntington, N.Y./Walt Whitman) made 13 saves for her 11th complete-game shutout this season and 27th of her three-year career.
The Crimson controlled play for most of the first half, however, Boston College did counter with several quality scoring opportunities as halftime drew near. Minutes after rocketing a shot just wide of the left goalpost, Guarino collected a pass from sophomore Rachel Parri (Madison, Conn./Daniel Hand), who dribbled the ball from midfield. With a Crimson defender draped on her right side, Guarino barreled into the 18-yard box and managed to unleash a left-footed shot to the near post which slid through the hands of Harvard freshman goaltender Cheryl Gunther. It was Guarino's 18th goal of the season and 45th point. The senior co-captain also has nine game-winning goals, including the game-winner against Fairfield in the first round of the NCAA tournament.
Harvard applied pressure throughout the second half, and despite five corner kick opportunities, could not find the back of the net. With five minutes remaining, Guarino outleapt the rest and headed a Harvard corner kick to midfield thereby deflating Crimson's offensive attack.
Boston College improved to 16-6-1 this season while the Crimson ended its 1999 campaign at 14-2-1.
